Federal Agency Strategic Sustainability Performance Plans (SSPP)

On October 5, 2009, President Obama signed the Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance Executive Order (E.O. 13514) requiring each federal agency to develop, implement, and annually update an integrated Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan (SSPP).  Each plan includes a discussion of the climate change risks and vulnerabilities on the agency's operations and mission. The E.O. also requires agencies to actively participate in the Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force and “develop approaches through which the policies and practices of the agencies can be made compatible with and reinforce that strategy.”

By June 2012, each SSPP was required to include an agency climate adaptation plan for implementation in FY 2013. The climate adaptation plan must be consistent with the guidance outlined in Implementing Instructions for Agency Climate Change Adaptation Planning released by the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) in March 2011.
