Nebraska LB 583 - Provide duties for the Climate Assessment Response Committee

Approved by GovernorĀ HeinemanĀ on June 4, 2013, LB 583 is the first legislation to address climate change in Nebraska. The purpose of the law is to delineate the responsibilities of the Climate Assessment Response Committee. LB 583 requires the Committee to report to the Governor on the impacts of climate change on Nebraska and facilitate communication between stakeholders to address such impacts and response strategies.

Other notable mandates are for the Committee to "provide a mechanism for the improvement of methods of assessing impacts of drought on agriculture and industry," and to "establish criteria for startup and shutdown of various assessment and response activities by state and federal agencies during drought and other climate-related emergencies."

LB 583 also requires a long term strategic report to be submitted by September 1, 2014 to the Governor and Legislature on how Nebraska should prepare for climate change.
