Sustainability Action Plan: A Sustainability Action Toolkit for Lake Tahoe

The Sustainability Action Plan for the Lake Tahoe Region serves as a toolkit that regional agencies and local jurisdictions can use to develop their own sustainability actions under a consistent regional framework. The plan offers strategic guidance on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, climate preparedness and resiliency planning, implementing higher standards for social equity and quality of life, and environmental protections in the Lake Tahoe Region.

This Plan is described as “a menu of climate and sustainability actions from which regional agencies, local jurisdictions, businesses, groups, schools, individual residents, and visitors can pull to develop sustainability actions.” The strategies in this plan include exceeding the current standards for green buildings, sustainable forest practices, innovative transportation solutions, and conserving biological diversity, among others.

Chapter 5: Climate Change Readiness describes expected climate change impacts for the Tahoe region, and associated vulnerabilities to resources and communities. Climate risks and vulnerabilities are detailed for local Water Resources including water quality and supply; Hazards of wildfire and floods; Community Health - disease vectors, extreme heat and air quality; Biological resources including forest resources, biodiversity; Energy and Economy.

The Actions for Climate Change Readiness section of this chapter includes many adaptation strategies and tools for reducing vulnerability to climate impacts and increasing resilience, under similar categories:
