Washington State Agency Climate Leadership - WA SB 5560
The Washington State Agency Climate Leadership bill was signed into law in July of 2009 by then Governor Gregoire. The legislation mandates an integrated climate change response strategy from multiple state agencies, to enable Washington's agencies, businesses, NGOs and individuals to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Sections 10-13 define requirements for state departments of ecology, agriculture, community, trade, and economic development, fish and wildlife, natural resources, and transportation to develop the climate response strategy. The initial strategy must include identification of barriers to action, and opportunities to incorporate climate change impact projections into planning and decision making. See "Preparing for a Changing Climate: Washington State's Integrated Response Strategy" in this Clearinghouse for more detail on the results of this legislation.
Mitigation provisions are also included in this bill, however, the Governor partially vetoed items in sections 3, 4, and 7, with no effect to the adaptation provisions.
