Climate Change Tree Atlas

The Climate Change Tree Atlas helps determine current and future suitable habitat and distribution of 134 tree species in the Eastern United States based on current climate and projected suitable habitat for the year 2100. The Atlas provides detailed information on environmental characteristics defining these distributions for each species, and can be used to develop large-scale projections of species responses to climate change. By taking current distributions of tree habitat in the U. S.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources Policy: “Building Resilience to Climate Change”

As the lead agency in Maryland for climate change adaptation efforts, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) issued this policy to “provide direction and guidance regarding the Department’s investments in and management of land, resources and assets in the face of climate change.” The policy is “to make sound investments in land and facilities and to manage [DNR] assets and natural resources so as to better understand, mitigate and adapt to climate change.”

Maryland's Department of Natural Resources Policy Number 2010-11: Building Resilience to Climate Change

Enacted in 2010 by the State of Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources, this document sets forth the Department’s policy to manage the state’s land, natural resources and assets toward better understanding, mitigating and adapting to climate change. In this policy, the Department identifies climate change-related practices, procedures and implementation actions across seven areas: new land investments, facility and infrastructure siting and design, habitat restoration, government operations, research and monitoring, resource planning, and advocacy.

Edmonston, Maryland Green Streets Project
2010
Edmonston, a small town near Washington DC in Prince George’s County, MD, created a “green street” to address previous problems with flooding on Decatur Street near the Anacostia River. The town wanted to better manage that flooding and improve water quality, as well as to manage traffic by narrowing the street. The project utilizes a variety of green infrastructure tools to reduce stormwater runoff, thereby decreasing the amount of polluted water that enters the Anacostia River. While the project does not specifically reference climate change as a motivation, the methodology and considerations for this project, could be useful for a jurisdiction that will experience heavier precipitation due to climate change.

Sea Level Rise Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM)

The Sea Level Rise Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM), from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is an online modeling tool designed to present sea-level rise scenarios to the public. It can be used to inform adaptation efforts including restoration of marshes, strategic land acquisitions, and infrastructure management.

Maryland Climate Change Insurance Advisory Committee Report
2010
Maryland’s 2008 Climate Action Plan, the "Comprehensive Strategy for Reducing Maryland’s Vulnerability to Climate Change – Phase I: Sea-level rise and coastal storms," established a recommendation to create an advisory committee to “advise the State of the risks that climate change poses to the availability and affordability of insurance” to consumers and business in Maryland. The Climate Change Insurance Advisory Committee was subsequently created and issued this report in 2010 to implement the recommendation.

Vulnerability and Climate Change in the U.S. Southeast
Oxfam America is funding programs in Louisiana and elsewhere in the Southeastern U.S. to help those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change to adapt and be better prepared. The goal of this project is to bring a fuller understanding of social vulnerabilities due to climate change in the U.S. southeast region to the public through a multidisciplinary examination of risks, hazards, and disaster.

Maryland Update to the Governor and General Assembly
January 2010
The report summarizes implementation progress of the Maryland Commission on Climate Change policy recommendations as identified in the state's 2008 Climate Action Plan. The Climate Action Plan contains 19 policy recommendations that focus on climate change adaptation, primarily for sea-level rise and coastal storm surge - from both the Mitigation Working Group's (MWG) and the Adaptation Response Working Groups' (ARWG). For each of the recommendations brief updates are provided, including any institutional, regulatory or legislative actions.
