State of the Forest 2014 Report: Roaring Fork Watershed, Colorado

From the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES), the 2014 State of the Forest Report presents an in-depth look at the health of regional forests, including climatic factors and insect and disease infestations currently impacting local forests. This graphically-rich magazine style report is intended to help inform policy that promotes managing for healthy forests by federal, state, and local governments as well as NGOs and private citizens living in and around the wildland-urban interface.

The Economic Case for Restoring Coastal Ecosystems

The Center for American Progress (CAP) and Oxfam America collaborated with a research team to identify and analyze 3 coastal restoration sites of the 50 that NOAA funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. A detailed economic analysis of three sites was produced that exemplify the potential economic benefits of coastal restoration. The sites analyzed for the report are an oyster reef and sea grass restoration project in the Seaside Bays of Virginia, an oyster reef project in Mobile Bay, Alabama, and salt marsh restoration in San Francisco Bay, California.

Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Transportation Infrastructure in New Hampshire

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) conducted an assessment of the vulnerability of the state’s transportation system, and this report outlines the results, and includes an action plan of adaptive strategies for the department to address climate-related impacts. NHDOT assets, programs, policies, and activities (APPA) that may be impacted by climate change are discussed. The report also describes NHDOT’s goals to increase the resilience of the state’s transportation infrastructure, and the department's preparedness for natural disasters and climate-related impacts.

A Geospatial Dataset for U.S. Hurricane Storm Surge and Sea-level Rise Vulnerability: Development and Case Study Applications

Published in the ‘Climate Risk Management’ journal, this study presents the results of an effort to develop storm surge inundation layers for the eastern U.S. - a first pass assessment of exposure to hurricane storm surge and sea-level rise for the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts. The results include multiple inundation mapping overlays reflecting both hurricanes of different intensities as well as various scenarios of sea-level rise.

Understanding the Economic Development Opportunity & Impact of Climate Change

This report by the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation considers the economic development implications associated with climate change, including preparing for and recovering from extreme weather events. Challenges and opportunities are examined across the following industries: small business, ports and marine trades, tourism, defense/naval, manufacturing, aquaculture, agriculture, and energy. The report is broken up into sections on each of the industries covered. For each industry, the authors discuss climate change considerations relevant to that sector, similar work underway in other states, and next steps for Rhode Island state government, local governments and the business community.

Critical Issues in Aviation and the Environment

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) reviews the critical concerns and research priorities for environmental issues impacted by and affecting aviation activities in this report, including the issue of climate change. TRB evaluated the aviation impacts on noise, air quality, climate change, and water quality; sustainable solutions to minimize impacts; and processes and tools for solution implementation. Adaptation planning and preparedness is addressed with the general recommendation that downscaled, region-specific climate projections should be incorporated into airport planning processes and operations.

Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability: Summary for Policymakers - IPCC Working Group II Fifth Assessment Report (WGII AR5)

The most comprehensive assessment of scientific knowledge on global climate change to date, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) is being released in four parts between September 2013 and November 2014. The AR5 contains contributions from three Working Groups. Working Group I assesses the physical science basis of climate change, Working Group II assesses impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability, while Working Group III assesses the mitigation of climate change.

2014 Heatwave Business Impacts, City of Melbourne, Australia

The City of Melbourne, Australia conducted this study to get an understanding of the perceived impacts of a 2014 heatwave on the Melbourne business community. Melbourne has experienced several extreme heatwaves in recent years and climate projections show an increase in heatwaves in the future. This is a unique study because most research has been related to impacts of urban heat on the personal health of individuals, rather than impacts to businesses.

Omitted Damages: Whats Missing From the Social Cost of Carbon

The 2013 Interagency Working Group on the Social Cost of Carbon (IWG) updated the U. S. social cost of carbon (SCC) for 2015 from a central value of $24 to $37. SCC is an estimate of the economic damages associated with a small increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, conventionally one metric ton, in a given year. The SCC is meant to be a comprehensive estimate of climate change damages and includes, but is not limited to, changes in net agricultural productivity, human health, and property damages from increased flood risk.

Climate Change: Energy Infrastructure Risks and Adaptation Efforts (GAO-14-74)

The U. S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has examined the vulnerability of the nation's energy infrastructure to climate change impacts. This report describes their findings including: (1) what is known about potential impacts of climate change on U. S. energy infrastructure; (2) measures that can reduce climate-related risks and adapt energy infrastructure to climate change; and (3) the role of the federal government in adapting energy infrastructure and adaptation steps selected federal entities have taken.
