The RainReady Approach: Linking Municipalities and Residents to Manage Urban Flooding with Distributed Green and Grey Infrastructure

This paper presents approaches to residential flood mitigation through the RainReady program, developed by the non-profit Center for Neighborhood Technology. Urban flood mitigation programs may be designed in a number of ways, as illustrated by two case studies that each offer unique outcomes for flood risk analysis and reduction; community participation; and distributed stormwater infrastructure design.

Resilient By Design - Bay Area Challenge

Resilient by Design is a collaborative design challenge for the San Francisco, California Bay area to develop 10 innovative community-based solutions that will strengthen the region’s resilience to sea level rise, severe storms, flooding and earthquakes. The Resilient by Design - Bay Area Challenge was modeled on New York's Rebuild by Design, a successful program pioneered by The Rockefeller Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Putting Green Infrastructure on Private Property in New York City

This paper provides an overview of challenges faced by New York City based on existing stormwater management infrastructure and regulation. It also summarizes the City's green infrastructure goals and the benefits and costs expected from meeting these goals. The report then delves into the issue of using private property to house green infrastructure, including the difficulty of scaling up these installations and using public money to increase the volume of green infrastructure on private property.

Green Infrastructure in Parks: A Guide to Collaboration, Funding, and Community Engagement

In May 2017, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency released a guide on how stormwater management agencies could work with parks departments to integrate green infrastructure solutions into park lands. The guide walks municipalities through the steps of developing a green infrastructure program including: (1) identifying and engaging partners, (2) building relationships, (3) leveraging funding, (4) identifying opportunities for green infrastructure, (5) planning maintenance, and (6) undertaking pilot projects.

Beyond Diversity: A Roadmap to Building an Inclusive Organization

This paper assesses the diversity of staff and boards of directors among large non-profit organizations and foundations working in the environmental sector. The paper argues that diversity is increasingly important within this sector to broaden the base of constituents, increase focus on environmental justice, and bring in a wider range of perspective to successfully identify solutions to environmental challenges. While this paper is not specifically focused on adaptation, it does discuss findings about diversity within organizations that are working in the adaptation space.

USDA Northeast Climate Hub virtual demonstration project "As If You Were There"
2017
The USDA Northeast Climate Hub created a virtual tour of climate adaptation and mitigation practices on farm and forest lands across the northeast region of the U. S. This virtual demonstration project features interactive 360 degree photography and videos, allowing users to “embark on virtual field tours to visit and consider the experiences of others who are adapting to a changing climate - all from their own computer or mobile devices. ” The purpose is to combine technology with educational storytelling to engage more people in decision-making on adaptation.

The Atlas Marketplace

The Atlas is an online “marketplace and recommendation engine” for environmental technology and infrastructure solutions. Over 250 sustainable, resilient and/or green infrastructure projects and tools are showcased on the Atlas website. These climate adaptive infrastructure solutions can be used to support the new design of similar systems.

Reaching Higher Ground: Avenues to Secure and Manage New Land for Communities Displaced by Climate Change

From the Center for Progressive Reform, this paper provides an analysis of the legal, policy, and corporate tools to acquire and govern land to relocate a community. It presents the most promising approaches that could feed into workable strategies for land acquisition, with the aim of protecting people and property in the short term, promoting climate resiliency in the long-term, and maintaining important cultural and economic assets. A number of case studies are included, many of which are focused on Native Americans and Alaskan Natives, since sea level rise and in turn coastal relocation is a present issue among these communities.

Based on years of research conducted by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES) on resilience planning in the private sector, the report reviews common themes that emerged about the value cities and businesses find in working together, and provides recommendations to city resilience planners for how they can begin to cooperate with the private sector.

Voluntary Resilience Standards: An Assessment of the Emerging Market for Resilience in the Built Environment

This report offers an analysis of 14 voluntary resilience standards by which buildings can be evaluated. The resilience standards addressed are based on guidelines and tools designed to help communities prepare for climate change and hazards - including certifications, benchmarking systems, planning frameworks, and design principles. Recognizing that the market for climate resilient infrastructure standards is nascent, the report discusses how existing programs can encourage medium-term and long-term planning, evaluating the programs using the following criteria: Target Audience - focuses on the type of facility, factors beyond those of the physical site, and the life cycle of the building Impact and Scope - considers social vulnerability and performance goals for certain situations including flooding, earthquakes, and high winds Standard Development Process - how community input was incorporated in the program design and the verification process The resilience standards analyzed were developed by various organizations including nonprofits, universities, U.
