Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis (Working Group I Contribution to the IPCC 5th Assessment Report)

One of the main activities of the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the preparation of comprehensive Assessment Reports about the state of scientific, technical and socio-economic knowledge on climate change, its causes, potential impacts and response strategies. Since its inception in 1988 the IPCC has prepared four multi-volume assessment reports and is in the process of finalizing the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5). AR5 is being released in four parts between September 2013 and November 2014.

Literature Synthesis on Climate Change Implications for Water and Environmental Resources

This report synthesizes regional studies on the implications of climate change on Bureau of Reclamation operations and activities in 17 Western States. Specifically, the report addresses past and projected effects of climate change on hydrology and water resources. The report outlines implications for the key resource areas the Bureau considers in its planning processes for each of the Bureau's five regions: Pacific Northwest, Mid-Pacific, Lower Colorado, Upper Colorado, and Great Plains.

USDA Climate Change and U.S. Agriculture - An Assessment of Effects and Adaptation Responses

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a technical report, Climate Change and Agriculture in the United States: Effects and Adaptation, Technical Bulletin 1935, in 2012 which details the known climate change effects on U.S. agriculture, and adaptation measures to minimize these impacts. This report is a summary of the technical bulletin, highlighting the major findings, and prevailing and potential adaptation strategies.

Preparing the Nation for Change: Building a Sustained National Climate Assessment Process
September 2013
Following the release of the draft of the Third National Climate Assessment from the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), the National Climate Assessment and Development Advisory Committee (NCADAC - a 60 member Federal advisory committee) developed this report to provide advice on the sustained assessment process. Sustained assessment process activities, such as developing a system of indicators, are already underway.

Adapting to Climate Change and Variability Marquette, Michigan

This assessment outlines the climate concerns of the city of Marquette, Michigan - which is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula region. Marquette’s economy relies on tourism, timber, mining, health care, education, and high tech manufacturing. The city is already seeing climate impacts in Lake Superior’s warmer waters that has raised bacterial levels high enough to force Marquette to close a public beach. The plan drew on a series of public meetings and small group sessions where participants assessed strategies related to: Transportation, Tourism, Agriculture, Land Use, Forests, Natural Resources, and Public Health.

Future Flood Losses in Major Coastal Cities

This article, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, quantifies present and future flood losses in the world’s largest 136 coastal cities. The researchers conclude that the world’s coastal cities cannot afford to ignore adaptation measures and policies in the face of increasing climate-related flood losses.

Economic Benefits of Increasing Electric Grid Resilience to Weather Outages

Severe weather is the leading cause of power outages in the United States and between 2003 and 2012 - with an estimated 679 widespread power outages to have occurred due to severe weather during this time frame. The number of outages caused by severe weather is expected to rise as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of hurricanes, blizzards, floods and other extreme weather events.

Managing Coastal Watersheds to Address Climate Change: Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Options for the Middle Patuxent Subwatershed of the Chesapeake Bay

The purpose of this project and report is to help the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its partners to address climate change impacts in the Chesapeake Bay, focusing on how to integrate climate change into coastal restoration and conservation activities. To do this, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) worked with NOAA, a panel, and technical experts to identify climate change impacts for the Middle Patuxent sub-watershed and developed options for adapting restoration and conservation practices to address those impacts.

U.S. Energy Sector Vulnerabilities to Climate Change and Extreme Weather

This Department of Energy report provides an assessment of how the effects of climate change have impacted and will impact the production, delivery, and storage of energy. The report is organized by climate impact, exploring various aspects of energy production and transmission related to each. It offers real world examples of threatened facilities and describes current adaptation actions underway. The report also suggests steps to improve adaptive capacity by investing in technology and equipment, improving policies to allow for better technology deployment, advancing analytics and monitoring to allow for more informed decisions, and increasing engagement between stakeholders and user communities to facilitate better planning and operations.

Hampton Roads Military Transportation Needs Study: Roadways Serving the Military and Sea Level Rise/Storm Surge

This report is intended to address sea level rise and storm surge flooding related threats to military transportation infrastructure and readiness. It was prepared by the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTO) at the request of military officials, who expressed concerns in 2009 that delays at the region’s bridges and tunnels were negatively impacting their ability to carry out their missions. To address these concerns and better understand the scope of the problem, the study includes three phases; (1) a highway network analysis, (2) a survey of military commuters, and (3) an analysis of roadways serving the military and sea level rise/storm surge.
