Climate and Health - Understanding the Risk: An Assessment of San Francisco’s Vulnerability to Extreme Heat Events

The San Francisco Department of Public Health was awarded funding by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct an environmental health assessment of vulnerability to heat waves and air quality. This report provides an overview of the health department’s study of heat distribution, and predictions of neighborhoods that are especially vulnerable to extreme heat in San Francisco, California. The assessment will inform climate change adaptation planning efforts including a heat wave disaster response plan.

Estimating and Forecasting Ecosystem Services within Pine Island Sound, Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, North Captiva Island, Cayo Costa Island, Useppa Island, Other Islands of the Sound, and the Nearshore Gulf of Mexico

This study identified the range and quantity of ecosystem services within the Pine Island Sound region. Pine Island Sound is located in Lee County, Florida, lying between Pine Island and the barrier islands of Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, North Captiva Island and Cayo Costa, which separate the Sound from the Gulf of Mexico.

Virginia's Climate Modeling and Species Vulnerability Assessment: How Climate Data Can Inform Management and Conservation
2013
This project developed models of select fish, wildlife and tree species distributions in Virginia under multiple climate change scenarios, and produced a species vulnerability assessment for the state. The assessment is intended to help decision makers better understand how climate change will likely affect sensitive species and habitats in Virginia. The project was funded by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) through a State Wildlife Grant, and by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) with funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, and was supported by research from the Conservation Management Institute at Virginia Tech.

EPA Region 10 Climate Change and TMDL Pilot Project: Restoring Salmon Habitat for a Changing Climate in the South Fork Nooksack River, WA
January 2013
The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 10 and Washington State Department of Ecology conducted a Temperature Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for the South Fork Nooksack River (SFNR) in coordination with the Nooksack Tribe. In addition to this Regulatory Requirement, Region 10 has partnered with EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) and Office of Water (OW) and together initiated a Pilot Research Project to consider how projected climate change impacts for the SFNR could be incorporated into the TMDL and influence salmonid habitat restoration plans that address climate change impacts.

Assessing the Vulnerability of Key Habitats in New York: A Foundation for Climate Adaptation Planning

This report includes an evaluation of the impacts of climate change on fish, wildlife, and habitats of New York, and an overview of adaptation strategies. Developed by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), the information produced through this project and included in this document will broadly inform the incorporation of climate change considerations into the revision of New York’s Wildlife Action Plan (WAP) which is slated for completion in 2015.

Impacts of Climate Change on Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Ecosystem Services

This report was developed as technical input for the 2014 National Climate Assessment*, to synthesize the scientific understanding of the way climate change is affecting ecosystems, ecosystem services and the diversity of species, as well as what strategies might be used by natural resource practitioners to decrease current and future risks. More than 60 federal, academic and other scientists authored this impact assessment.

Tracking the Effects of Sea Level Rise in Georgia's Coastal Communities

The result of a semester-long graduate planning studio at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the project's goal is to provide residents, decision-makers, and researchers with information that can help to proactively plan for future sea level rise (SLR).

Foundations for Community Climate Action: Defining Climate Change Vulnerability in Detroit
December 2012
The Detroit Climate Action Collaborative (DCAC) partnered with University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning to assess climate change vulnerability in Detroit, Michigan - and the results are presented in this report. A Vulnerability Assessment is included which identifies places and populations in Detroit that are at risk from specific climate impacts, with a focus on extreme heat and flooding. An overlay of the socio-economic demographics was added to help prioritize the populations that may experience the greatest vulnerability.
