California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) – Green Technologies for Reducing Slope Erosion

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Division of Research and Innovation conducted a Preliminary Investigation (PI) to identify strategies for reducing roadside slope erosion and preventing costly slope failures as climate change alters patterns of precipitation in California. The PI found that in general, California is a leader in erosion control and stormwater management, but recommended follow-up research on the effectiveness of specific plants or “green” products that may enhance or improve the nature-based methods for stabilizing slopes that California has already begun to implement.

Greening America's Communities (formerly known as Greening America's Capitals) is a U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) program to help cities and towns plan for environmentally friendly neighborhoods that incorporate innovative green infrastructure strategies. In collaboration with U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Partnership for Sustainable Communities, EPA provides design assistance to help support sustainable communities that protect the environment, economy, and public health - and to inspire state leaders to expand this work elsewhere.

America's Climate Choices: Limiting the Magnitude of Climate Change

Limiting the Magnitude of Climate Change focuses on climate change mitigation goals, opportunities, and policies, and recommends the U.S. climate policy goal be stated in terms of a budget for cumulative greenhouse gas emissions over the period 2012 to 2050. The report suggests the revenues created by tax receipts or allowance sales from carbon pricing could be used to fund climate adaptation efforts.

Letter Report Assessing the USGS National Water Quality Assessment Program's Science Framework

The U. S. Geological Survey requested that the National Research Council review and provide guidance on the direction and priorities of the National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. The Council put together a committee to provide an assessment of the NAWQA Program's Science Framework in terms of whether it sets forth adequately the priorities for the future which will be addressed in the third cycle of the program. The report recommends that activities in this cycle be organized around two drivers of stressed water supplies and related ecosystems: change in land use, and climate variability and change.
