A Linkage Network for the California Deserts
February 2012
From the Science and Collaboration for Connected Wildlands and Northern Arizona University, this report presents the findings of a comprehensive, multi-jurisdictional habitat connectivity assessment for 44 focal species of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts in southern California. This study aimed to identify “least-cost” land corridors and linkages essential to maintain or restore in order to promote the adaptive capacity of species movement and ecological processes under changing climatic conditions.

Cook County, Illinois Climate Change and Public Health Action Plan

This strategic plan was developed to help Cook County, Illinois adapt to current and projected public health impacts resulting from climate change. The plan identifies five areas of concern in the county including: extreme heat and weather; food-borne illness; vector-borne illness; water quality and quantity and waterborne diseases; and air pollution and allergens - which are expected to be more prevalent as climate change continues and extreme weather events become more common. This report was sponsored by the Chicago Physicians for Social Responsibility.

U.S. Department of Defense 2012 Climate Change Adaptation Roadmap

The Department of Defense (DoD) released their first Climate Change Adaptation Roadmap (CCAR) in 2012, detailing the Department’s plan for managing the effects of climate change on its operations and infrastructure in both the short and long term. According to the CCAR, DoD expects climate change to challenge its ability to fulfill its mission in the future, and climate-related effects already are being observed at DoD installations throughout the U.S. and overseas.

Florida's Community Resilience Initiative - Planning for Sea Level Rise
2012
In January 2011, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) approved the Florida Coastal Management Program’s (FCMP) Section 309 Strategy, including an initiative to be conducted by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) titled, “Community Resiliency: Planning for Sea Level Rise. ” This five-year initiative is examining the statewide planning framework and determining how to best integrate adaptation into the existing process as well as how to coordinate adaptation efforts across Florida.

Sea Level Rise Adaptation Strategy for San Diego Bay, California

The San Diego Bay Sea Level Rise Strategy provides a regional approach to sea level rise adaptation, and is a foundation to guide coordinated adaptation planning among participating local jurisdictions. The strategy was prepared by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, and resulted from the efforts of a collaborative, regional stakeholder process undertaken as part of the San Diego Regional Climate Protection Initiative, a partnership with the San Diego Foundation and all local governments in the San Diego region.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) Framework

CDC’s Building Resilience Against Climate Effects (BRACE) framework provides specific guidance to states and cities on developing strategies and programs aimed at reducing the health consequences of climate change. CDC provides funding for state, territorial and tribal health departments to conduct analytic and programmatic activities by developing public health adaptation strategies using the BRACE framework. CDC’s Climate-Ready States and Cities Initiative is already helping 16 states and 2 cities develop ways to anticipate the public health effects of climate change by applying climate science, predicting specific impacts, and preparing flexible localized programs.

St. Bernard Parish Coastal Zone Management Program

This document updates the Coastal Zone Management Program (CZMP) of St. Bernard Parish, outlining a plan to guide coastal development with restoration and protection, incorporating sea level rise planning for the Parish. The original CZMP was created in 1982 and has been a working program since its official approval in 1987. 'Adapting to Sea Level Rise: A Guide for California’s Coastal Communities' was created to serve as a guide for California’s coastal managers and community planners to develop adaptation plans for sea level rise (SLR) that are suited to their local conditions and communities. The guide begins with background information about climate change and SLR, and an explanation of why planners in coastal communities should begin to plan for SLR and the associated coastal hazards. The remaining sections describe the processes of performing SLR vulnerability assessments and risk analysis for the development of adaptation plans that can be tailored specifically to individual communities.
