NYC Municipal Water Efficiency Program: Timed Spray Showers: The New York City Departments of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Parks and Recreation installed water-saving automatic shut-off timers and activation buttons on 400 spray showers at City playgrounds in order to conserve water by ensuring that showers are activated only when in use. The $3 million initiative, funded by DEP and jointly managed through a partnership with NYC Parks, is part of a larger citywide effort to reduce water consumption by 5 percent.

Cities Taking Action: How the 100RC Network is Building Urban Resilience

Developed by the Rockefeller Foundation, 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) is a non-profit dedicated to helping cities around the world become more resilient to climate change and other compounding stressors (e. g. high unemployment, aging infrastructure, social inequality). This report describes seven projects that exemplify urban resilience strategies supported by 100RC, and highlights 33 additional projects across 25 more member cities worldwide which are working on similar resilience challenges.

From the RAND Corporation - a global nonprofit research organization - this report addresses stormwater management and sewer overflow issues in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania metropolitan region within Allegheny County. The research behind this project provided the baseline science needed first to address this system future, in the face of climate change. This research is designed to support improved stormwater, wastewater, and climate resilience planning in the Pittsburgh region - and offers a robust framework for other cities facing these issues.

Forest Resilience Bond - Fighting Fire with Finance
2017
Blue Forest Conservation is developing the Forest Resilience Bond (FRB) to monetize the benefits of forest restoration for climate resilience. Similar to an Environmental Impact Bond or sustainable infrastructure financing, the FRB is a public-private partnership that deploys private capital to support climate resilient national forests. The FRB creates value for a diverse set of stakeholders or beneficiaries of healthy forests - including the U. S. Forest Service (USFS), water and electric utilities, private water-dependent companies, state governments, and insurance companies.

Bayside Adapts Initiative - Portland, Maine

The City of Portland, Maine created the Bayside Adapts initiative to work with community members and organizations to adapt the Bayside neighborhood of downtown Portland to climate change impacts. The initiative includes two completed projects - the Bayside Adapts Design Challenge and the Sewer and Stormwater System Data Gap Analysis - which address the impacts of sea level rise, storm surges, and increased intense rainfall events in Bayside.

Delaware Climate-Ready Workforce Pilot Project

As part of Delaware’s Climate-Ready Workforce Pilot Project, this report recommends strategies to address climate-related risks to indoor and outdoor workers who are exposed to extreme temperatures, storms, flooding, as well as indirect impacts related to air quality, vector-borne disease, and water-related illness. Written in response to the Climate Framework for Delaware, the report addresses concerns about climate-related threats to workers across state agencies, and offers recommendations related to policy development and implementation.

14 Solutions to Problems Climate Change Poses for Conservation - Examples from the WCS Climate Adaptation Fund

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation created the WCS Climate Adaptation Fund to “incentivize new and innovative efforts to help wildlife and ecosystems respond to climate change. ” As of 2016, the WCS Climate Adaptation Fund awarded more than $12 million to 66 adaptation projects across the United States. This report presents 14 climate change adaptation strategies or “solutions” for sustaining wildlife populations and ecosystems, with examples of projects supported by the Climate Adaptation Fund that exemplify each solution.

Cool Neighborhoods NYC
June 14, 2017
New York City Mayor de Blasio launched Cool Neighborhoods NYC in June 2017. This $106 million program is designed to minimize the effects of extreme heat on the city by implementing projects such as cool roofs, city-wide tree plantings, and climate risk training for home health aides, among others. The comprehensive resilience program aims to reduce heat-related health impacts by lowering temperatures in heat-vulnerable neighborhoods and strengthening social networks as well. Cool Neighborhoods NYC is led by the Mayor’s Office of Recovery & Resiliency and will be implemented in partnerships with NYC Parks, the Health Department, Small Business Services, Emergency Management, and members of the private sector.

An Equitable Water Future - A National Briefing Paper

From the U. S. Water Alliance, An Equitable Water Future explores the implications of water supply stress and management on vulnerable or disadvantaged communities and discusses the opportunities to build more equitable water systems. The report identifies the ways in which water issues like affordability and aging infrastructure disproportionately impact vulnerable communities, and highlights the potential to leverage water systems to build water equity. The Alliance determined that the focal elements to building water equity are to ensure that all people have access to safe, clean water; benefit from water infrastructure investments; and are climate resilient.

FEMA Community Rating System
2017
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary program that incentivizes participants to take community floodplain management practices that reduce flood risk and exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). As a result, CRS jurisdictions can earn discounts on NFIP flood insurance premiums for their residents and gain additional benefits to build overall community resilience. The NFIP offers reduced flood insurance to all properties in communities that comply with federally designated minimum standards for floodplain management.
