State of the Birds: 2010 Report on Climate Change

The 2010 State of the Birds report was organized by the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, U.S. Committee and released on March 11, 2010 by the Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. This is the first themed State of the Birds report which explores the vulnerability of birds and their habitats to climate changes across the major biomes of the United States.

North Carolina Sea-Level Rise Assessment Report
March 2010
In March 2010, the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission's (CRC's) Science Panel on Coastal Hazards released this report estimating the extent of land on the North Carolina coast that will be covered by sea-level rise over this century. After explaining how sea-level rise can be assessed and measured, the report provides estimates for sea-level rise through the years 2025, 2050, 2075 and 2100. It concludes with recommendations to make improvements in sea-level monitoring as a first step to adaptation planning.

Climate Change and Wildlife Health: Direct and Indirect Effects

Prepared by the USGS National Wildlife Health Center, this fact sheet explains that climate change will have significant effects on wildlife, as well as human and domestic animal diseases. Effects discussed include: geographic range and distribution of wildlife diseases, plant and animal phenology, wildlife host-pathogen interactions, and disease patterns in wildlife.

Preliminary Study of the Effect of Sea Level Rise on the Resources of the Hayward Shore - California
March 2010
The Hayward Area Shoreline Planning Agency (HASPA) had a preliminary study conducted on the impact of sea-level rise on the resources of the Hayward shoreline, and the actions that could be taken to protect both the wetlands and shoreline development in this area of the San Francisco Bay, California. Planning of the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service addressed the projected change in sea-level within the HASPA planning area to the south of Highway 92.

Oyster River (New Hampshire) Culvert Analysis Project
March 2010
In this project the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership (PREP) performed a vulnerability assessment of the hydrology and drainage system of the Oyster River watershed in southeastern New Hampshire and its capacity to adapt to climate change impacts and increased development. The project used a geographic information system (GIS) based watershed model to identify the road/stream crossing culverts that are vulnerable to failure due to extreme storms with increased precipitation, in combination with development of the watershed.

Projected Health Impacts of Climate Change in Thurston County

This white paper is a summary of the public health effects that can be expected due to climate change impacts in Thurston County, Washington. It is intended to build an understanding of, and capacity to plan for, the public health consequences of climate change within the county's health department. Findings are based on a review of literature, websites, and conversations with local researchers conducted in September, 2009, as one of the early steps in carrying out a grant award from the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO).

Preliminary Assessment of Rhode Island's Vulnerability to Climate Change and its Options for Adaptation Action - Summary

This high-level assessment addresses climate change impacts and vulnerabilities in Rhode Island, and provides recommendations intended to support state and local planning efforts. The projected climate impacts on the state that are detailed in the report include warmer temperatures, extreme weather, worsening air quality, threats to municipal utilities, and biodiversity, coastal, economic and public health impacts.

Vulnerability and Climate Change in the U.S. Southeast
Oxfam America is funding programs in Louisiana and elsewhere in the Southeastern U.S. to help those most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change to adapt and be better prepared. The goal of this project is to bring a fuller understanding of social vulnerabilities due to climate change in the U.S. southeast region to the public through a multidisciplinary examination of risks, hazards, and disaster.

National Assessment of Shoreline Change: Historical Shoreline Change along the New England and Mid-Atlantic Coasts

Part of a series of reports on shoreline change produced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), summarizes historical changes of sandy shorelines in 10 regions of the U.S. New England and Mid-Atlantic coasts. The report emphasizes the hazard from erosion at regional scales and relates this hazard to the body of knowledge regarding coastal geology of the New England and Mid-Atlantic region because of its potential impact on natural resources and the economy.

Ocean Acidification: A National Strategy to Meet the Challenges of a Changing Ocean

Evidence suggests ocean acidification will have negative effects on corals, shellfish, and other marine life, with wide-ranging consequences for ecosystems, fisheries, and tourism. This report, requested by Congress, reviews the effects of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems, the chemistry of seawater, and the physiology of marine organisms. The report reviews the current state of knowledge and identifies gaps in understanding, and provides scientific advice to help guide the national ocean acidification research program.
