"Resolve, To Evaluate Climate Change Adaptation Options for the State": Maine SP0163 / LD 460

In this resolution, passed April 23, 2009, the Maine legislature directed its Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to create a stakeholder group with the purpose of evaluating the measures available to non-governmental organizations, state agencies, and the business community to prepare for and adapt to the most likely impacts of climate change. The DEP is directed to plan for the issues raised in the 2009 climate impact assessment, including considering ways to create a hospitable landscape for the development of greenhouse gas offset projects and emission technologies.

California Department of Water Resources Sustainability Policy and Guidelines

On Earth Day 2009, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) adopted its first Sustainability Policy, forming the foundation of DWR’s many “greening” activities. This policy outlines the business objectives and actions of making sustainability a criterion in decision-making processes. The policy articulates the goals and directions being taken to be a sustainability leader within State government and the California water community, better stewards of the environment, and to provide cost savings to the State taxpayers through reduced operating costs.

DOI Secretarial Order 3226, Amendment No. 1, 2009 - DOI Climate Change Task Force

In 2007, a Climate Change Task Force was created within the Department of the Interior (DOI) to study climate change and its effects on the responsibilities of the Department. The Task Force included three subcommittees that developed options for actions DOI should consider with respect to legal and policy issues, land and water management issues, and climate change scientific issues. This Amendment to the Order provides guidance to bureaus and offices within the DOI on how to provide leadership by developing timely responses to these emerging climate change issues.

The Western Governors' Association (WGA) Policy Resolution 09-3 describes the WGA's position on climate change mitigation and adaptation. City of Seattle, Washington Stormwater Code
2009
The City of Seattle, Washington’s stormwater regulations are implemented in order to improve stormwater management for new development in Seattle, including on-site stormwater management. Seattle’s Stormwater Code imposes retention requirements on residential properties. These requirements vary according to several factors, including the type of sewer system or water body to which the site discharges and the size of the land disturbance or impervious surface on that site. For example, if a parcel discharges into small lake basins and its total new-plus-replaced impervious surface is 2000 square feet or more, it must manage stormwater from a 25-year rainfall event (a storm that has a 4% chance of occurring in any given year).

California Executive Order S-13-08 Requiring State Adaptation Strategy

Chicago Energy Conservation Code

The City of Chicago amended Title 18 of the City's Municipal Code to add Chapter 13 to promote the use energy conservation measures in buildings. Energy efficiency upgrades can help to reduce waste energy from buildings, which contributes to the urban heat island effect in the city. Energy efficiency measures in buildings also can help reduce carbon pollution.

Massachusetts Global Warming Solutions Act (S. 2540 MA)

Signed by the Governor on August 7, 2008, Section 9 of this Act creates an Advisory Committee to "analyze strategies for adapting to the predicted impacts of climate change in the commonwealth" of Massachusetts. Committee membership requirements are articulated, including expertise in the following areas: "transportation and built infrastructure; commercial, industrial and manufacturing activities; low income consumers; energy generation and distribution; land conservation; water supply and quality; recreation; ecosystems dynamics; coastal zone and oceans; rivers and wetlands; and local government.
