Environmental Impact Report in San Francisco Bay Area Transportation 2035 Plan: Change in Motion

April 2009

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) completed an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) In order to assess the impacts of proposed transportation investments in the San Francisco Bay Area. The EIR includes a qualitative assessment of potential climate change impacts on the region’s transportation system, with a focus on sea-level rise impacts. It also suggests measures to protect transportation assets from the impacts of climate change. The EIR, finalized in 2009, was part of the development of the MTC’s long-range transportation plan, “Transportation 2035 Plan: Change in Motion.

City of San Rafael, California Climate Change Action Plan (April 2009)

April 1, 2009

The City of San Rafael's Climate Change Action Plan describes the city's current efforts and recommendations to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. Mayor Al Boro was one of the initial signers of the U. S. Conference of Mayors Climate Projection Agreement in 2005, pledging that the city will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol. To meet these goals, the City Council appointed a 16-member Green Ribbon Committee to lead a community process to prepare a plan to guide both the city organization and the entire community in responding to climate change.

Alaska's IAWG 2009 Final Report: Recommendations to the Governor's Sub-Cabinet on Climate Change

March 2009

Alaska's Immediate Action Workgroup (IAWG) of the Governor’s Executive Subcabinet on Climate Change was formed in 2007 to make and prioritize annual recommendations to address impacts to the state's communities from climate change. The Workgroup released its first report in 2008, addressing known climate threats to communities caused by coastal erosion, thawing permafrost, flooding, and fires. The climate impacts are assessed and recommendations are made for each of the Alaskan communities of Kivalina, Koyukuk, Newtok, Shaktoolik, Shismaref, and Unalakleet.

New Hampshire Climate Action Plan: A Plan for New Hampshire's Energy, Environmental and Economic Development Future

March 2009

The New Hampshire Climate Change Policy Task Force released its Climate Action Plan in March 2009, addressing both mitigation and adaptation. In this report, 67 recommended actions are organized within 10 strategies, of which one strategy is to "Plan for how to address existing and potential climate change impacts."

Strategies for Reducing the Impacts of Surface Transportation on Global Climate Change

February 2009

From the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, the objective of this research was to analyze the relationship of surface transportation to emissions of greenhouse gases and climate change, and review the implications of government mitigation strategies for transportation-system management. While this report focuses on mitigation efforts in the transportation sector, a chapter is included which identifies the need for adaptation measures.
