New Hampshire Wildlife Action Plan
2006
Congress charged each state and territory with developing a wildlife action plan in order to receive funds through the Wildlife Conservation and Restoration Program and the State Wildlife Grants Program. These proactive plans, known also as “Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategies,” assess the health of each state’s wildlife and habitats, identify the problems they face, and outline the actions that are needed to conserve them over the long term.

California Climate Change Center (CCCC)
The California Energy Commission’s Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Program established the California Climate Change Center (CCCC) in 2003 to document climate change research relevant to the state. The Center was the first state-funded climate change research program in the nation. Its goal was to enhance national and international studies, generating new information that can be used to shape California’s climate change policy. This center operated as a virtual organization with core research activities at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of California, San Diego, complemented by efforts at other research institutions.

NJADAPT.org
NJADAPT is a collaborative effort consisting of scientists and data managers in academia, government, the private sector, and the NGO community who have developed a strategic plan for a New Jersey platform to host and apply climate science and impacts data. This effort was established at the Rutgers Climate Institute, and has been supported by the New Jersey Recovery Fund, the New Jersey Coastal Management Program, and NOAA.

Denali Commission
"In Alaska, President Obama designated the Denali Commission as the lead Federal point of contact for Alaska Native coastal villages affected by coastal erosion, flooding, and related problems driven by climate change. The Commission hosts the first-ever catalog of grants and technical assistance available to Alaska Native villages. To build capacity in rural villages, the Commission is transforming the catalog to make it more accessible for village administrators and has funded project managers or project coordinators in each of the four most imminently threatened communities.

Clean Energy Group
Since 1998, Clean Energy Group, a national nonprofit organization, has worked to expand markets for clean energy technologies, including solar, land-based wind, offshore wind, fuel cells, energy storage, and biomass. In 2002, Clean Energy Group created the Clean Energy States Alliance to help state and municipal clean energy funds work together to deploy projects. In 2013, with support from major foundations and in a joint effort with the Meridian Institute, Clean Energy Group launched the Resilient Power Project.

Yankeetown, Florida Natural Resource Adaptation Action Area
The Town of Yankeetown, Florida is utilizing a state authorized land-use planning tool — called Adaptation Action Areas — to mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise on local ecosystems. Specifically, Yankeetown is experiencing coastal inundation due to sea-level rise that is causing large swaths of coastal forests to rapidly decline and salt marshes to migrate inland, creating a phenomenon known as “ghost forests.” Yankeetown has taken a unique approach to planning for coastal change by utilizing Adaptation Action Areas. Adaptation Action Areas are overlay districts local governments can utilize to increase management attention and oversight over defined areas within their municipality with the goal of increasing resilience to sea-level rise impacts. Yankeetown amended its local comprehensive plan to create a “Natural Resource Adaptation Action Area,” which is the first instance of a locality in Florida using this tool for the purpose of natural resource management rather than solely infrastructure protection. The tool is helping Yankeetown shape future growth and development to conserve and protect its natural resources in the face of rising seas. Local governments could consider adopting overlay districts like Adaptation Action Areas or other zoning, land-use, or planning tools to reduce or limit development in wetland and forest migration pathways as a part of comprehensive retreat strategies.

Samish Indian Nation Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment

The Samish Indian Nation have lived along the Salish Sea of Washington State “since time immemorial,” and are experiencing the impacts of climate change on their ancestral lands, waters, communities, wildlife, culture, and way of life. The Samish Indian Nation Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment was developed to provide the tribe with an understanding of how climate change will impact important resources, and to highlight areas that need further research and adaptation planning. It was prepared through collaboration of the Samish Indian Nation staff and Tribal community members led by the Samish Climate Change Working Group.
