Resilient Atlanta - Actions to Build an Equitable Future

The City of Atlanta, Georgia's urban resilience strategy, Resilient Atlanta, offers a set of visions, targets, and actions that address social equity and climate change adaptation. The strategy was developed to support the prevention of, and resilience to, extreme climate events such as major floods or heat waves, and long-term chronic stresses such as income inequality, lack of affordable housing, and the effects of climate change.

The report describes the federal actions that have been taken to promote state and local resilience initiatives by the Obama administration and describes ways that the new administration can build upon and enhance these efforts. The report also includes case studies from around the country about ways that cities, states and tribal governments are preparing for the impacts of climate change.

Victoria's Climate Change Adaptation Plan (2017-2020)

Australia's State of Victoria Climate Change Adaptation Plan defines Victoria's climate change action priorities for 2017-2020. The Plan sets out the Government’s strategic priorities, measures and responses for adaptation in Victoria through 2020, as required by the state's Climate Change Act 2010. Victoria defines immediate priorities to address localized climate impacts and risks, and describes methods for building partnerships for an integrated response to climate change.

Eugene and Springfield Multi-Jurisdiction Natural Hazard mitigation Plan

The cities of Eugene and Springfield, Oregon have updated the Multi-jurisdictional Natural Hazards Mitigation Plan (NHMP) to address earthquakes, flood, landslides, volcanic or seismic activity, wildfire, and winter storms. Climate change is discussed throughout the plan as it expands these impacts and affects many of the plan’s focal sectors - especially natural systems and water resources.

Seattle Extreme Heat Scenario-Based Pilot-Project in Frontline Communities - Racial Equity Mini Evaluation

The Seattle, Washington Extreme Heat Scenario-Based Pilot-Project was commissioned by the City of Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment, funded in part by the Urban Sustainability Directors Network, and conducted by Equity Matters. It was commissioned as a pilot program to understand how municipal agencies, including Public Health - Seattle and King County, and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, can better support low-income communities and communities of color during extreme heat events.

NPS Gulf Islands National Seashore - Fort Pickens Ferry System
September 2015
In order to maintain cost-effective, sustainable visitor access to the Gulf Islands National Seashore (GUIS), the National Park Service (NPS) proposed the development of passenger ferry service from Pensacola, Florida, to Fort Pickens. Santa Rosa Island, the site of Fort Pickens and part of GUIS, is susceptible to coastal storms and erosion. The Fort Pickens Road within GUIS is frequently damaged by storms, including hurricanes in 2004 and 2005. The transportation system in the Fort Pickens area is particularly vulnerable to disruptions caused by these impacts.

Elevating Roads in Norfolk, Virginia
February 2014
The Norfolk, Virginia Department of Public Works invested $2. 4 million in 2013-2014 to improve two waterfront streets, Brambleton and Colley Avenues, and reduce flood impacts. To reduce tidal flooding of the roadway the city elevated and widened a section of Brambleton Avenue and rebuilt the intersection of Brambleton and Colley Avenues. Brambleton Avenue is a principal artery in downtown Norfolk that runs along the Elizabeth River and crosses over an inlet called the Hague. The project was implemented to address recurrent flooding that was already occurring in the area, which had caused frequent road closures.

Redesign of 21st Street, Paso Robles, California
2013
The City of Paso Robles, California redesigned a downtown street utilizing complete and green street design principles to better manage precipitation and stormwater runoff in a natural drainage area. The 21st Street redesign project has proven successful as a means of stormwater management. In a three-month period, the street’s new features, which include pervious pavement, street trees, and a stream channel in the middle of the street, helped mitigate flooding from nine significant rain events, and recharged approximately 250,000 gallons of stormwater into the region’s groundwater basin.

The research was funded by the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility in Australia.

The City of Lewes, Delaware Hazard Mitigation and Climate Adaptation Action Plan - Transportation Components
