Climate Resilient and Equitable Water Systems Capital Scan

The Kresge Foundation’s Environment Program has developed a strategy to address climate change impacts on water systems while prioritizing the needs of low-income communities. The report describes a set of integrated strategies for how grants and investments can best support climate-resilient and equitable water systems. Recommendations are focused on scaling up green infrastructure, water efficiency, and climate planning to address flooding, storm damage and drought impacts.

Microsoft Climate Data Initiative
July 2014
In response to President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, Microsoft offers the Climate Data Initiative (CDI) Award program. This program supports the CDI’s goals of preparedness for and resilience to climate change impacts.The Microsoft Azure for Research program granted 12 months of free cloud computing resources to 20 awardees selected. Each award provides up to 180,000 hours of cloud computing time and 20 terabytes of cloud storage to be used for the project.

King County Strategic Climate Action Plan - 2015 Update
November 2015
In November 2015 King County, Washington adopted an update to their Strategic Climate Action Plan, which includes the county's plans for both reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for climate change impacts. Section 2 describes the county's adaptation plans for 12 focus areas: built environment (wastewater, roads and bridges, airport, county buildings and facilities) and planning and regional services (regional planning, public health, stormwater, floodplains, salmon recovery and rural programs, public transportation, environmental science and monitoring, and emergency management).

Missouri Comprehensive State Energy Plan
October 2015
In October 2015, officials within the Missouri Department of Economic Development and the Division of Energy released the Comprehensive State Energy Plan, which outlined recommendations that would help the state transition to cleaner, more affordable, and more reliable energy. As a result of numerous public meetings and significant stakeholder participation, the agencies were able to divide their recommendations into five categories that would help Missouri achieve its energy goals: promoting efficiency of use; ensuring affordability; diversifying and promoting security in supply; undertaking regulatory improvements; and stimulating innovation, emerging technologies, and job creation. Compliance with these statewide recommendations will help to create new jobs, expand the economy, facilitate more efficient use of energy in all sectors, and help households more effectively manage their energy budgets – all in a more equitable manner. The Plan is a living document that serves as a resource for all elected officials, communities, businesses, and even individuals. In local, frontline communities especially, it is intended to serve as the basis for developing community-specific plans that not only emphasize its energy resources, but the priorities of the area.

The District of Columbia Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) Climate Change Adaptation Plan describes the impacts that the District is likely to experience due to climate change, outlines a framework for identifying priority assets, and sets forth a series of action items for implementing the Plan. The target audience for this framework plan is decision makers, engineers, designers, planners, and other transportation professionals in DDOT. The plan focuses only on transportation and was developed based on the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) research and guidance.

Boston Complete Streets: Design Guidelines
2013
The Boston Transportation Department and other Boston city agencies have developed Complete Streets guidelines that incorporate green infrastructure components such as permeable pavements and street trees to address impacts of climate change including increased heat and precipitation. “Complete streets” are designed to create more sustainable transportation networks by encouraging multi-modal travel options and enhancing the natural environment within the public right-of-way. By promoting the use of green infrastructure, the City can help reduce the urban heat island effect and mitigate flooding.

Impacts of Climate Change on Forests of the Northern Rocky Mountains

Greauxing Resilience at Home — Town of Washington, Virginia: Rush River Commons Mixed-Use Development

The Town of Washington, Virginia is a small rural town that largely benefits from the service and tourism industries. Initially funded by private citizen Chuck Akre, Rush River Commons is a project of the Sherwood Fund, the Akre family’s operating foundation. Rush River Commons is a proposed mixed-use development project for the Town of Washington. The project prioritizes the historic character of the Washington community and respects the surrounding natural environment. The proposed plan includes building a community center, office space for nonprofits, and affordable rental housing on a nine-acre property located in the town. The project also includes a plan for restoring the land’s natural wetlands and amenities. Construction of Rush River Commons is set to begin in early 2022. The Rush River Commons project shows how mixed-use development can be designed in a way that is compatible with rural communities. It is also a good example of how local policymakers can help create comprehensive plans and ordinances that support both public and private affordable housing ventures.
