World Economic Forum Report: Global Risks 2015 – 10th Edition

The 10th Annual World Economic Forum Global Risks Report highlights the most significant long-term risks worldwide, and “failure of climate change adaptation," is one of the top risks determined that the world faces in terms of both impact and likelihood. "Extreme weather events" - a separate category - is the second likeliest cause of global risk (behind international conflict).

Greater Boston, Massachusetts Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy
January 2015
The Metropolitan Area Planning Council of Boston (MAPC) released their Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) in 2015, which aims to direct economic development throughout the region until 2020. While the Strategy describes dozens of action items to increase economic resilience, one of the priorities is to address the impacts that climate change will have on Boston’s economy, especially on vulnerable, under-represented communities. The Strategy establishes several goals to increase the City’s economic resilience in the face of climate change and support these frontline communities, including for income inequality within the region to decrease, and that the Metro Area grow a strong supply of skilled and educated workers. In order to achieve these goals, the CEDS recommends several economic development and climate resilience actions to be implemented by policymakers, business owners, local colleges, and more.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guide, “Toward Sustainable Pavement Systems: A Reference Document,” synthesizes current knowledge on pavement system sustainability, including the effects that pavement has on climate-related considerations such as stormwater runoff and the urban heat island effect. The guide includes information and extensive synopses of current research on how pavement materials, design, construction, maintenance, and other use considerations can affect and enhance sustainability.

System for Assessing Vulnerability of Species (SAVS) Climate Change Tool
2011
Ecologists and biologists from the USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) developed a System for Assessing Vulnerability of Species (SAVS) to climate change as a tool for natural resource and wildlife managers to quantify the impacts of expected climate change on terrestrial vertebrates and inform species conservation and management planning. The SAVS climate change tool ranks species in the order of their relative vulnerability or resilience based on species data and expected changes in temperature, precipitation, and vegetation.

City of Benicia, California Climate Change Vulnerability and Risk Summary Report
2015
The City of Benicia is a coastal community in the San Francisco Bay area of California. In April 2014, Benicia was awarded a California Coastal Conservancy Climate Ready Grant for $150,000 to conduct a climate change vulnerability assessment and to develop a climate adaptation plan. The Vulnerability and Risk Report was developed in partnership with ICF International and Placeworks, who examined climate change related vulnerabilities and risks in Benicia (primarily sea level rise, flooding and temperature changes).

Central New Mexico Climate Change Scenario Planning Project and Long Range Metropolitan Transportation Plan
2015
The Mid-Region Council of Governments of New Mexico (MRCOG) is integrating climate change analysis into long-range transportation and land use planning through the Central New Mexico Climate Change Scenario Planning Project. MRCOG partnered with federal land management agencies, the U. S. Department of Transportation Volpe Center, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to plan for a regional reduction in future greenhouse gas emissions, and to prepare for the potential impacts of climate change.

Minnesota Options to Increase Climate Resilience in Buildings
January 2015
In this report Georgetown Climate Center explores steps that Minnesota state agencies and the Minnesota Legislature can take to enable more building resilience to climate impacts at the local level, as well as some actions municipalities may already have authority to implement. Minnesota faces increased frequency and severity of flooding, and building and site design can either contribute to or help to mitigate the frequency and severity of this flooding.

Portland, Oregon Tree Code
2011
In 2011, the City of Portland, Oregon developed a new tree code in order to preserve the urban forest and to actualize goals in the city's 2007 Urban Forest Action Plan. Prior to the new tree code, tree-related regulations were inconsistent with city policies and processes relating to planting and removal of city, street, and private trees. Recognizing that trees provide environmental, social and economic benefits to the city, the City of Portland established a legal framework and clear permitting processes to regulate trees in both development and non-development situations.

Initiated by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1996 and now led by the Water Research Foundation since 2004, the International Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMP) Database contains a growing collection of BMP studies with metadata on site conditions, design parameters, and stormwater monitoring results. The database features hundreds of BMP studies, performance analysis methods and results, tools for performance studies and reporting, monitoring guidance, and other study-related publications.
