Monitoring, Mapping, Modeling, Mitigation, and Messaging: Maine Prepares for Climate Change

The Environmental and Energy Resources Working Group was established by Governor LePage to identify ways that Maine can better respond to climate change. Lead by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), this Working Group’s report summarizes ongoing adaptation projects and identifies ways that the work could be streamlined. It also includes input from stakeholders at public meetings which helped inform its recommendations. The report’s recommendations are divided into five broad approaches: monitoring, mapping, modeling, mitigation, and messaging.

Guidelines for Considering Traditional Knowledges in Climate Change Initiatives

These guidelines recommend ethical conduct practices for dealing with traditional knowledges (TKs) of indigenous peoples. The guidelines revolve around the two principles of “Cause No Harm” and “Free, Prior, and Informed Consent.” The purpose of the guidelines is to create mutually beneficial interactions between tribes and non-tribal partners that respect the cultural and economic values of indigenous peoples.

Maryland and the Surging Sea: A Vulnerability Assessment with Projections for Sea Level Rise and Coastal Flood Risk

Climate Central has launched the Surging Seas Risk Finder tool for the state of Maryland, along with this high-level summary report of findings on coastal flooding risk and sea level rise impacts for the state. The report presents some of the major categories and highlights, with a focus on exposure below 5 and 9 feet. The Surging Seas Risk Finder presents thousands of combinations of analysis results by geography, water level, and variable. EPA Flood Resilience: A Basic Guide for Water and Wastewater Utilities

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed this guide to help drinking water and wastewater utilities become more resilient to flooding. In the approach, the utility would examine the threat of flooding, determine impacts to utility assets and identify cost-effective mitigation options. A simple, 4-step assessment process is outlined to help water utilities understand their flooding vulnerability and identify practical mitigation options to protect critical assets. The guide is particularly useful for small and medium utilities.

Building a Climate Resilient National Capital Region

In 2013 and 2014, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), General Services Administration, US Global Change Research Program, National Capital Planning Commission, Smithsonian Institution, and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments sponsored two series of workshops to assist with climate adaptation planning and improve coordination in the Washington D. C. / National Capital Region. The report “Building a Climate Resilient National Capital Region: Federal and community agencies working together on climate preparedness and resilience” summarizes the Climate Change Vulnerability and Adaptation workshop series, providing the results and adaptation strategies proposed for the National Capital Region.

Savannah, Georgia Region's Total Mobility Plan: 2040 Metropolitan Transportation Plan

The Coastal Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (CORE MPO) adopted the Total Mobility Plan: 2040 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (“plan”) to help guide officials responsible for planning and preparing Chatham County-Savannah infrastructure for changes the region will see in the upcoming decades, including the impacts of climate change and sea-level rise. Required by federal law to be updated every five years, the plan updates the region’s 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan and puts a greater emphasis on sustainability, complete streets, context-sensitive design and non-motorized transportation options.

Summer in the City: Hot and Getting Hotter

In this report from Climate Central, the combined impacts of climate change and urban heat islands are described, as taken from analysis of 60 of the biggest cities across the U.S. The study looked at how much hotter the urban environments are compared to nearby rural areas, and how these temperature differences have been changing since 1970.
