On December 28, 2012, then-Governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley, Executive Order 01.01.2012.29, Climate Change and “Coast Smart” Construction, directing all state agencies to consider the risk of coastal flooding and sea level rise in the siting and design of state structures to avoid or minimize impacts. The order applies to all state facilities and structures, including transportation facilities.

Impacts of Climate Change on Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Ecosystem Services

This report was developed as technical input for the 2014 National Climate Assessment*, to synthesize the scientific understanding of the way climate change is affecting ecosystems, ecosystem services and the diversity of species, as well as what strategies might be used by natural resource practitioners to decrease current and future risks. More than 60 federal, academic and other scientists authored this impact assessment.

Tracking the Effects of Sea Level Rise in Georgia's Coastal Communities

This report focuses on the sea level rise impacts as well as adaptation opportunities for three counties along the Georgia coast (Chatham, Liberty, and McIntosh). The result of a semester-long graduate planning studio at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the project's goal is to provide residents, decision-makers, and researchers with information that can help to proactively plan for future sea level rise (SLR).

St. Johns County, Florida Ordinance 2012-35
December 4, 2012
St. Johns County, Florida passed an ordinance in 2012 providing for the modification of design criteria and standards in “environmentally challenging locations” where typical road design standards are not feasible due to naturally occurring conditions that cause repeated damage or other challenges. The Florida Department of Transportation sets minimum design standards for roads within the state (as laid out in the Florida Greenbook[ref title=""]Manual of Uniform Minimum Standards for Design, Construction and Maintenance for Streets and Highways; also knowns as the Florida Greenbook.

King County, Washington 2012 Strategic Climate Action Plan

King County’s 2012 Strategic Climate Action Plan (SCAP) summarizes the County’s efforts in addressing climate change, outlining the county’s most critical goals and priority actions for preparing for climate impacts and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The plan is designed to inform policy and budget decisions, and to serve as the framework for annual reporting along with the County’s energy, green building and environmental purchasing programs. The plan responds to King County Council Ordinance 17270, which required the county executive to develop a strategic climate action plan by 2012, and update the plan in 2015.

The Infrastructure and Climate Network (ICNet)
The Infrastructure and Climate Network (ICNet) brings together climate scientists, engineering researchers, private practitioners, and transportation officials to support adaptation in the transportation sector in the Northeast US. The focus of ICNet is to deliver data, tools, partnerships, and education to help transportation agencies understand potential climate impacts to the transportation system and identify engineering solutions to prepare roads, bridges, and other infrastructure for the effects of climate change.

Clean Rivers, Green District Agreement

In 2012, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water), and the Government of the District of Columbia (Washington D. C. ) joined in a partnership agreement to to advance green infrastructure in D. C. The “Clean Rivers, Green District” agreement outlines the collaborative steps to support green infrastructure to achieve sustainable stormwater management, more livable communities, and other environmental improvements in the District.

Climate Communication and Engagement Efforts: The Landscape of Approaches and Strategies

The Resource Innovation Group’s Social Capital Project and Climate Access identified climate communication framing approaches and a variety of theories of social and behavioral change most prevalent in climate change communications and public engagement initiatives. The project researched the main categories of organizations working on climate communication and behavior change projects, the key frames, and focal strategies being pursued by these initiatives.
