Grand Rapids, Michigan Climate Resiliency Report
December 2013
The West Michigan Environmental Action Council, in partnership with the Grand Rapids Office of Energy and Sustainability, investigated climate change resiliency for Grand Rapids, Michigan with city grant funding in 2012. The outcome of the study was the identification of key impacts across community sectors in Grand Rapids, and recommendations for managing these impacts through adaptation and resiliency planning. Drawing on interviews from local experts from a wide range of sectors, the report uses the triple bottom line framework to analyze the social, economic, and environmental aspects of climate resiliency.

Imagine Flint: Master Plan for a Sustainable Flint, Michigan

The City of Flint, Michigan built a comprehensive Master Plan in 2013 as a policy guide for long-range planning in operations, future development, and as a tool to transform Flint into “a more sustainable, innovative, accessible, and economically vibrant community. ” Imagine Flint is the City's first comprehensive Master Plan in over 50 years, and has a long range goal of 20 years for implementation. The plan incorporates numerous sustainability and climate change adaptation strategies. Flint’s Master Plan contains land use designations, policies, goals, and objectives that direct future growth and development, while considering future zoning, development regulations, and capital improvement investments.

Adapting to Climate Change and Variability Marquette, Michigan
September 2013
This assessment outlines the climate concerns of the city of Marquette, Michigan - which is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula region. Marquette’s economy relies on tourism, timber, mining, health care, education, and high tech manufacturing. The city is already seeing climate impacts in Lake Superior’s warmer waters that has raised bacterial levels high enough to force Marquette to close a public beach. The plan drew on a series of public meetings and small group sessions where participants assessed strategies related to: Transportation, Tourism, Agriculture, Land Use, Forests, Natural Resources, and Public Health.

Great Lakes Green Streets Guidebook
August 2013
This guidebook, published by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG), provides examples of roadways projects within the Great Lakes Watershed that utilize green infrastructure methods to improve water quality and reduce stormwater runoff. Developed as a complement to the Low Impact Development Manual for Michigan, the guidebook offers support to municipalities interested in planning, designing, and constructing green streets.

Changing Climate, Changing Wildlife: A Vulnerability Assessment of 400 Species of Greatest Conservation Need and Game Species in Michigan

The Wildlife Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources assessed the climate change vulnerability of 400 animal species in Michigan. Using the Nature Serve Climate Change Vulnerability Index (CCVI) tool, all resident terrestrial game species and all Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) with enough life history data were assessed. The species considered “vulnerable” to climate change are those expected to experience reductions in range extent or abundance by 2050. The CCVI analysis indicates that 17% of terrestrial game species and 61% of terrestrial and aquatic SGCN are vulnerable in Michigan.

Michigan Climate and Health Adaptation Program
2013
The Michigan Department of Community Health has developed the Michigan Climate and Health Adaptation Program (MICHAP) to prepare for health risks from climate change. Through support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), MICHAP is building a climate-resilient public health system for Michigan at the state, local health department, and community levels.

Foundations for Community Climate Action: Defining Climate Change Vulnerability in Detroit
December 2012
The Detroit Climate Action Collaborative (DCAC) partnered with University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning to assess climate change vulnerability in Detroit, Michigan - and the results are presented in this report. A Vulnerability Assessment is included which identifies places and populations in Detroit that are at risk from specific climate impacts, with a focus on extreme heat and flooding. An overlay of the socio-economic demographics was added to help prioritize the populations that may experience the greatest vulnerability.

Michigan DOT I-696 Slope Restoration Project
Fall 2012
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) restored roadside slopes along approximately 9 miles of I-696 between I-75 and I-94 using alternative plants that are heat and drought resistant and will help stabilize the slopes to prevent erosion. The slope restoration project is part of an effort to reduce stormwater runoff from roadways and thereby protect the quality of Michigan waterways. The 55,000 plants, shrubs, and trees selected create a variable-depth root structure to help stabilize the steep slopes and reduce runoff volume and velocity, particularly during intense rain events that are projected to increase in intensity and variability with climate change.
