Rio Grande Water Fund - Comprehensive Plan for Wildfire and Water Source Protection, New Mexico

The Rio Grande Water Fund and The Nature Conservancy developed this Comprehensive Plan to guide forest restoration projects, and outline a funding plan to ensure New Mexico’s water security through the restoration of forested watersheds connected to the Rio Grande. The plan sets the priorities for allocating funding to areas with important water sources and high wildfire risk. With reduced snowpack and hotter summer temperatures contributing to greater risk of severe wildfire, this plan represents an adaptation strategy to both moderate wildfire risk and to protect water quality and supply for New Mexico.

Maryland Land Preservation and Recreation Plan
2014
Updated every five years by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Maryland Land Preservation and Recreation Plan is a comprehensive, statewide plan to guide efforts to conserve natural and cultural resources and enhance access to recreation and open space on State lands. The Plan identifies priorities, goals, and measurable action items for a five-year period to encourage equitable access to the outdoors and stewardship of natural and cultural resources. The Plan recognizes that climate risks such as sea level rise, storm surge, drought, wildfire, flooding, and loss of high quality cold water all have the potential to negatively impact outdoor accessibility and recreation and that land conservation has habitat, recreation, and adaptation value.

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Planning Study for Water Quality Infrastructure in New Bedford, Fairhaven and Acushnet, Massachusetts

The Buzzards Bay National Estuary Program, through the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) and Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM), hired SeaPlan, an environmental planning firm, to conduct a climate ready estuary assessment and planning effort for the municipalities surrounding New Bedford Harbor. The purpose of this project is to develop an understanding of possible impacts of climate change and potential future responses by the Towns of Acushnet and Fairhaven, and the City of New Bedford, Massachusetts, with specific attention on sea level rise (SLR), precipitation, and frequency or intensity of storms that may affect public infrastructure related to water quality and habitat protection.

Metro Boston Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy Report

The Boston Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) has developed this adaptation strategy in response to research on the current and projected climate change impacts for the 101 cities and towns of the Metro Boston area of Massachusetts. A Vulnerability Assessment was conducted in developing this strategy and finds that the region is expected to experience an increase in frequency and severity of rain and snow storms, and an increase in heat waves, and sea level rise as a result of climate change.

City of Chester, Pennsylvania Vision 2020: Climate Adaptation Planning Elements

This report is a synthesis of the results and recommendations from a two year project funded by the 2012 National Sea Grant Climate Adaptation competition to help coastal communities better plan for future coastal hazards and climate risks. It builds upon PA Sea Grant’s work piloting the NOAA Coastal Services Center’s “Roadmap for Adapting to Coastal Risk” in 2011 and subsequent climate change adaptation goals included in the City of Chester Vision 2020 comprehensive plan. Chester was selected as a grant recipient to model how coastal communities could integrate climate change adaptation into wider economic revitalization strategies.

City and County of Denver, Colorado Climate Adaptation Plan

The City and County of Denver’s Climate Adaptation Plan was released in 2014 to accompany the 2007 Climate Action Plan. Working in concert, the objectives of the adaptation plan are to prepare, mitigate, and plan for risks associated with climate impacts to Denver, specifically: an increase in temperature and urban heat island effect; an increase in frequency of extreme weather events; reduced snowpack and earlier snowmelt.

Rebuild by Design: Big U - Transportation Elements

New York City has been awarded $335 million to build a flood protection system around lower Manhattan and protect the critical ground transportation artery FDR Drive, as envisioned in the Big U project proposal developed for Rebuild by Design. The Big U proposal was one of six winners of the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Rebuild by Design Competition and was developed by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). The BIG U project proposes to build deployable walls that swing down from the underside of FDR Drive, which runs along the East River on the eastern side of Manhattan and has been an inlet for flood waters into Manhattan during extreme weather events like Hurricane Sandy.

Rebuild by Design: Commercial Corridor Resiliency Project Proposal -- Transportation Elements

The proposed Commercial Corridor Resiliency Project included an element designed to improve the resiliency of a Queens, New York subway station by elevating the platform at Far Rockaway. The project proposal was developed and was selected as a finalist as part of the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Rebuild by Design Competition by the design team HR&A/Cooper Robertson. This proposal shows how the impacts of climate change like flooding can be addressed through elevating critical infrastructure while expanding access to commercial hubs.

City of Berkeley CA's 2014 Local Hazard Mitigation Plan

The 2014 Local Hazard Mitigation Plan updates Berkeley California's 2004 Disaster Mitigation Act, providing information on initiatives already underway to increase disaster resilience as well as outlining new risk assessments and policies. This update incorporates climate change into the plan, framing it as both a standalone hazard of concern, as well as an exacerbating factor in other hazards.
