Restoring the Great Lakes' Coastal Future - Technical Guidance for the Design and Implementation of Climate-Smart Restoration Projects

The purpose of this report is to provide an initial suite of tools and methods to assist in the planning and implementation of climate-smart restoration by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its partners and grantees. The National Wildlife Federation and EcoAdapt have partnered with NOAA’s Great Lakes Habitat Restoration Program to include climate change in the design and implementation of Great Lakes restoration projects. This guide presents a project-based approach to adjusting restoration activities to address the impacts of climate change on the region.

Digital Coast
The Digital Coast is a collaborative effort of organizations committed to providing data and information, tools, and training resources to help address timely coastal issues - including land use, coastal conservation, hazards, marine spatial planning, and climate change. NOAA's Coastal Services Center is maintaining the Digital Coast website which provides access to all the resources being developed and contributed by academic institutions, public and private sector entities. This curated collection of coastal and ocean data and tools are directed at decision makers, practitioners, and technicians.

Great Lakes Adaptation Assessment for Cities (GLAA-C)
2011
Conducted from 2011-2014, the Great Lakes Adaptation Assessment for Cities (GLAA-C) was an Integrated Assessment project supported by the University of Michigan Graham Sustainability Institute, the Kresge Foundation, and in collaboration with Great Lakes Integrated Sciences + Assessments (GLISA). The GLAA-C program was designed to work with cities throughout the Great Lakes region to better understand municipal level climate change impacts. The project also helped develop and implement a variety of adaptation measures throughout the region.

Climate Change Tree Atlas

The Climate Change Tree Atlas helps determine current and future suitable habitat and distribution of 134 tree species in the Eastern United States based on current climate and projected suitable habitat for the year 2100. The Atlas provides detailed information on environmental characteristics defining these distributions for each species, and can be used to develop large-scale projections of species responses to climate change. Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Action Plan

In February 2009, President Obama proposed $475 million for a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. This Action Plan describes how the Initiative was to be executed from 2010 through 2014, building on the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration Strategy (GLRC Strategy), which provided the framework for the Action Plan.

Chicago Green Alley Handbook
2010
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) authored the Green Alley Handbook to encourage the use of best management practices (BMPs) in and around Chicago alleyways and to address impacts to the city’s infrastructure likely to result from projected increases in precipitation and temperature. The handbook promotes sustainable alley design and adjacent landscaping practices to help reduce flooding and manage stormwater, reduce urban heat, promote recycling, and conserve energy.

Chicago, Illinois Climate Action Plan Progress Report, 2008-2009: The First Two Years

In 2009, 16 City of Chicago departments and sister agencies developed their individualized climate action work plans. In total, more than 450 initiatives with a direct benefit toward the goals of the Chicago Climate Action Plan were identified and are being coordinated and tracked on a quarterly basis.

Coastal Inundation Toolkit
The Coastal Inundation Toolkit was developed by the Digital Coast Partnership Group to help communities understand and address coastal inundation issues - where water covers what is normally dry land. Information and resources are organized into 5 stages: understanding coastal inundation, identifying community risks and vulnerabilities, creating inundation maps, communicating risks and vulnerability, and discovering what others are doing to address inundation. For each of these 5 areas, explanations and guidance are provided with links to the specific resources available from Digital Coast to support that specific step in the process, making this a user-friendly way to support assessments and planning for sea level rise and extreme weather events.

The Chicago Green Collar Jobs Initiative is a program that assists those seeking jobs in the Chicago metropolitan area ("Chicagoland"), with an emphasis on resilient and equitable employment. The Initiative is part of the Chicago Job Council's broader mission to create stable employment for frontline communities. Since its founding in 2002, the Initiative has focused their efforts on Chicagoland workers who have historically been left out of the labor market, and on educating disadvantaged job seekers.
