The District of Columbia has initiated a climate change adaptation assessment to examine current and projected risks from severe weather and to develop a resilience plan to sustain and enhance the District’s economy and quality of life. On March 14, 2013, the District Department of Environment (DDOE), the District Office of Planning (OP), and the Center for Clean Air Policy (CCAP) held a workshop to gather input to help shape future preparation efforts to ensure they reflect stakeholder knowledge, experience and priorities.

Getting Climate Smart: A Water Preparedness Guide for State Action

This state action guide was developed by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and American Rivers to provide water managers and state governments with information to help comprehensively plan and prepare for the water-related impacts of climate change. The guide combines practical advice and real-world case studies while outlining a six-step planning process for state governments, water managers, and other stakeholders to develop and implement climate preparedness plans.

The Plan describes specific actions Federal agencies will take to address key ocean challenges, give states and communities greater input in Federal decisions, streamline Federal operations, save taxpayer dollars, and promote economic growth.

Sea Level Rise Adaptation Primer: A Toolkit to Build Adaptive Capacity on Canada's South Coasts

Commissioned by the B. C. Ministry of Environment, this Sea Level Rise Adaptation Primer is a resource for local governments and land management authorities which provides information on a range of tools that can be used as part of a sea level rise adaptation strategy. The primer was developed to support climate change adaptation decision-making by agencies that regulate shoreline and floodplain development in British Columbia's coastal areas. Because of the unique cross-Canada partnership that was formed to direct the project, the primer will also be relevant in Quebec, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire Coastal Resilience Initiative: Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan

The City of Portsmouth, New Hampshire Coastal Resilience Initiative (CRI) was established to assess the potential local impacts from climate change for the state's "Seacoast" region, and to initiate adaptation planning. Prepared for the CRI by a team of researchers from the University of New Hampshire and the Rockingham Planning Commission, a detailed report provides an overview of the projected climate vulnerability of Portsmouth’s public and private assets. The report includes an assessment for climate change impacts on critical infrastructure and facilities, public health and coastal wetlands, and includes adaptive strategies for each of these sectors.

Jean Lafitte Tomorrow - Town Resiliency Plan
April 2013
The Town of Jean Lafitte, Louisiana created a comprehensive resiliency plan that reflects its “citizen’s shared vision of resilience,” as developed through a community-based stakeholder engagement process. Defining near- and long-term goals and objectives and explicit policy recommendations, the plan is a roadmap to resiliency for the Town’s economic, social, and ecological systems. The plan intends to preserve local bayou character and culture while reducing Jean Lafitte’s vulnerability to climate change related impacts such as flooding, sea level rise, and hurricanes.

Learning Collaborative for Multifamily Housing Resilience, New York City, New York

New York City’s Learning Collaborative for Multifamily Housing Resilience demonstrates how cities can partner with community development stakeholders to conduct vulnerability assessments that enhance the resilience of low-income communities to climate disasters. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, approximately 20% of the city’s public housing stock was damaged by flood waters, due in part to the placement of high concentrations of subsidized developments in surge-affected areas.
