The Paris Agreement: What it means for business

This report summarizes the key details of the 2016 UNFCCC Paris Agreement that affect the private sector, and outlines opportunities for businesses and investors to be a part of the global solution to address climate change. The report notes that the Paris Agreement will have both immediate and long term impacts for businesses. As States transition to a low carbon economy, businesses will be impacted by structural changes to energy, land use and urban systems. While pursuant to the Paris Agreement, States are taking action to build resilience and lower emissions in order to keep warming below 2°C, the report asserts that risks will remain and businesses will need to enhance their own climate resilience.

State of Wisconsin Hazard Mitigation Plan
December 2016 (amended January 2017)
The Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM) agency identifies the major hazards Wisconsin faces, and recommends actions to reduce vulnerability in the Wisconsin Hazard Mitigation Plan. This 2016 version acknowledges the risks of climate change, noting that the state has already experienced an average 1.1°F increase in temperatures over the last 50 years.

From the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, Let’s Keep Moving 2036 provides the overall policy guidance for regional and area planning of long-range transportation (highways, aviation, transit, rail, marine, bicycle, and pedestrian) in the state of Alaska. The plan includes goals, policies, and actions which inform statewide transportation programs and investments through the year 2036. It is based on technical analyses of four key trends, including climate change, that will have the greatest effect on the transportation system - which represents the government’s largest capital investment in the state.

Fostering and Communicating Sustainable Lifestyles: Principles and Emerging Practices

This report provided by the UN Environment Program outlines operating principles to guide the design, adaptation, and evaluation of “sustainable lifestyle” campaigns and initiatives. The report identifies strategies for developing community level sustainability projects, and provides guidance for effective communication, framing and engagement approaches. It includes 16 unique global case studies that represent various aspects of sustainable living - from compact communities, an agro-ecological marketplace, to a non-profit saving sharks from shark fin soup.

New Jersey Fostering Regional Adaptation through Municipal Economic Scenarios (NJ FRAMES)
2016
Based in coastal Monmouth County, New Jersey, NJ FRAMES is a collaborative project between the New Jersey Dept. of Environmental Protection, research institutions, and local communities to study and plan for future coastal hazards and flood vulnerability in the region. In 2016, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded New Jersey a nearly $900,000 Regional Coastal Resilience Grant in support of adaptation planning for 15 municipalities in northeastern Monmouth County.

Alaska Wildlife Action Plan
December 2016
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game developed Alaska’s Wildlife Action Plan to provide a common strategic framework for wildlife management, updated species data, and tools to support the conservation of the state’s aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. The original 2006 plan was updated in 2015, approved in 2016, and has been revised to focus on strategic approaches that will guide priorities and projects over the next 10 years. The purpose of the plan is to identify species of greatest conservation need in Alaska, describe their distribution and habitat use, and the key threats to these species.

Putting on a Resilience Lens: BoCo Strong Resilience Assessment for Boulder County

BoCo Strong uses this county-wide assessment to develop a shared vision of resilience and to better understand the steps that Boulder County, Colorado should take to build resilience. The report defines resilience, outlines a framework to assess if something is resilient, and reviews the challenges and opportunities to build resilience within six sectors: Community, Economy, Health and Social, Housing, Infrastructure, and Natural Environment. The report concludes with cross-sector and sector-specific recommendations to inform work, build partnerships, fill gaps, and increase capacity in the region.

The time to start is now: How implementing natural infrastructure solutions can improve and protect our coasts

This article discusses the value of integrating natural coastal hazard defense solutions - beaches, dunes, reefs and mangroves for example - to manage climate impacts such as sea level rise, flooding, or generally, wave attenuation. Natural infrastructure engineering guidelines that include performance evaluation are called for in order to begin to integrate these cost-effective methods into resilient coastal community planning.

New Mexico State Wildlife Action Plan
