The State of the Climate report is an annual summary describing the global climate. The 2015 report is a collaborative effort of more than 450 scientists from 62 countries led by NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information and published annually in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. This 300+ page report provides a detailed update on global climate indicators, describes notable weather events, and summarizes data collected by environmental monitoring stations and instruments located on land, water, ice and in space.

On August 4, 2016, Sacramento’s City Council unanimously approved a revised tree ordinance that provides additional clarity on how the city manages trees on both public and private property. The ordinance describes trees as an essential part of the city - providing scenic beauty, increasing oxygen levels, promoting ecological balance, providing natural ventilation and air quality improvements, preventing erosion, increasing property values, and improving quality of life. The ordinance combines three prior ordinances into a single ordinance, and updates policies to more stringently protect Sacramento’s tree canopy.

From the New Jersey Climate Adaptation Alliance and Rutgers University, this report provides an overview of projected climate change impacts on water supply in New Jersey, as well as recommended adaptation measures and policy responses to address these issues. The report explores a wide range of local and state level adaptation options for the protection and management of water supply resources and utilities - and is intended to inform the policy discussion on water management in New Jersey to better include climate change impacts.

In 2010, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) committing the agencies to coordinate support that they provide to communities on hazard mitigation, disaster recovery, sustainable development, and climate adaptation. The coordination reflects a recognition that when communities are engaging in post-disaster recovery and redevelopment planning, they should be considering climate adaptation, hazard mitigation, and smart growth policies.

We the People of Detroit Community Research Collective (WPD CRC) is a collaboration among community activists, academics, researchers, and designers in Detroit, Michigan studying the impact of water insecurity, water policy, social equity, and health among local residents. The research process included (1) mapping the geographic impact of water policies on the city; (2) conducting a city-wide community survey to assess the health needs after a disaster; (3) a citizen science project to test the impact of water shutoffs on residential water quality; and (4) a story mapping project to support youth in telling individual and collective narratives about the impact of austerity on their community. The community based participatory research process has provided statistically significant data to demonstrate the impact of policy interventions on water insecurity and psychological distress among residents. WPD CRC serves as an example of how community participatory research led by community-based organizations can effectively collect qualitative data from local communities and further apply to policy development.

In this report, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and the Regional Plan Association present best practices for state and local governments to encourage residents and communities vulnerable to flooding to relocate from coastal and riverine areas through managed retreat. Based on the experiences of communities in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut following Hurricanes Sandy (2012) and Irene (2011), the report summarizes the political, social, and economic challenges of using buyouts and acquisitions as an adaptation strategy.

UPDATE: On April 5, 2017, the Council on Environmental Quality published a notice in the Federal Register to withdraw the Final Guidance for Federal Departments and Agencies on Consideration of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and the Effects of Climate Change in National Environmental Policy Act Reviews. CEQ withdrew the guidance pursuant to President Trump’s Executive Order on Promoting Energy Independence and Economic Growth.

In 2016, the State of Maryland updated its Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) and included consideration of how climate change will affect the natural hazards that threaten the state's critical facilities, assets, and citizens. The plan analyzes risks of natural hazards in each region of the state, and provides data to guide hazard mitigation decisions and prioritize at-risk areas. The plan was developed by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) in coordination with other planning and adaptation initiatives at the local, state, and federal levels.

The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) partners with more than 40 data contributors from various government agencies, academic institutions, and other organizations to compile a key set of indicators related to climate change. The indicators are developed to better understand changes observed from long-term records related to the causes and effects of climate change, the significance of these changes, and their possible consequences for people, the environment, and society. EPA currently presents 37 indicators and five features that each highlight a specific region, data record, or area of interest.

Built to accompany the U. S. Climate Resilience Toolkit, the Climate Explorer offers graphs and maps of observed and projected temperature, precipitation, and related climate variables for every county in the contiguous United States. Additionally, the tool now offers hindcasts and projections for Alaskan boroughs. The Climate Explorer is designed to help local planners, residents, communities, businesses and others visualize the changing risks in their own communities in the coming decades by providing downscaled climate data and providing easy access to observed and projected temperature and precipitation data dating back to 1950 and out to 2100.
