In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, New York City (NYC) was left with significant damage to its urban retail corridors. In response, the NYC Department of City Planning launched the Resilient Retail study to address commercial-infrastructure flood resiliency, particularly in retail corridors located within the city’s floodplains. This report offers detailed case studies of affected areas, documents the challenges of increasing flood resiliency within retail corridors, and suggests potential solutions.

Originally published in 2006, the Oregon Conservation Strategy was updated in 2012 and 2016, and is the official State Wildlife Action Plan for Oregon. The Strategy is a plan for the long-term conservation of Oregon’s fish and wildlife, and presents non-regulatory recommended actions and tools for state agents, and the general public. The Key Conservation Issues identified include climate change, and the plan offers a number of goals and actions in support of wildlife adaptation to climate impacts in Oregon.

The Natural Capital Project (NatCap) offers software tools that quantify, map, and value services provided by nature, including “InVEST” - Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Trade-offs - which is a suite of software models used to map and value ecosystem services. The toolset currently includes 18 distinct InVEST models suited to terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems - and can be downloaded for free from NatCap's website.

This is a model that can be used to predict first-order fire effects, or the immediate consequences of a fire, for both prescribed burning and wildfires. This tool is designed to help land managers assess fire impacts and severity, plan effective and useful prescribed fires, and for other uses. The metrics used to determine consequences are tree mortality, fuel consumption, emissions/smoke production, and soil heating. From an adaptation perspective, this tool may be useful to support forest impact assessments pertaining to wildfires.

On an annual basis, the Department of State solicits grant applications from local governments for 50/50 matching grants from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund's (EPF) Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP). The LWRP provides technical assistance, and matching grants on a reimbursement basis (under Title 11 of the EPF) to villages, towns, cities, and counties located along New York’s coasts or designated inland waterways, to prepare or implement strategies for community and waterfront revitalization.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) produced this overview describing how the impacts of climate change in the transportation sector can disproportionately affect environmental justice (EJ) communities. The report recommends considerations for transportation providers to ensure that climate adaptation measures do not exacerbate these impacts. The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) policy statement on climate change previously specified that USDOT will address inequalities and EJ issues related to climate change and adaptation efforts.

In June 2016, New York City updated its local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) to require development and redevelopment projects to consider and mitigate against the risks posed by climate change and sea level rise. The LWRP is the city’s policies for management, use, and development of waterfront properties and coastal resources pursuant to the state's Waterfront Revitalization of Coastal Areas and Inland Waterway Act (NY Executive Law § 910 et seq. (McKinney)) and the federal Coastal Zone Management Act.

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) report, Natural Defenses in Action, discusses the role that nature-based approaches can play in reducing the impacts of weather and other climate-related hazards. The report contains 12 detailed case studies demonstrating how communities across the country are already successfully using nature-based infrastructure to protect against flooding, coastal storms, erosion, and wildfire. The report concludes that these nature-based approaches can be more cost-effective than traditional, man-made hazard-mitigation structures and measures, while offering additional environmental benefits.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) partnered with The Nature Conservancy and Chesapeake and Coastal Services to conduct a Statewide Coastal Resiliency Assessment. The study identified areas where natural habitats provide the greatest potential hazard risk reduction hazards for Maryland’s coastal communities, and determined priority areas for coastal conservation and restoration activities. Habitats play a large role in risk reduction for coastal community resiliency in Maryland such as greatly reducing the impacts of climate impacted coastal hazards such as sea level rise and storm surge.
