Puerto Rico Sea Grant
The University of Puerto Rico Sea Grant College Program (UPR Sea Grant) is an educational program dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean and coastal resources of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the wider Caribbean area. Their mission is twofold: 1) To conduct scientific research of excellence in the thematic areas of: water quality, fisheries and mariculture, coastal community economic development, and coastal hazards and safety; and 2) To apply scientific knowledge to a variety of marine and coastal problems and issues that the Puerto Rico community of users face everyday. UPR Sea Grant is a critical source of funding for large and small research projects that produce the needed information for the development of sound management plans for our marine resources and decision making in the archipelago of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
The National Sea Grant College Program (Sea Grant) works to create and maintain healthy coastal environments and economies. The Sea Grant network includes 32 programs based at top universities in every coastal and Great Lakes state, Puerto Rico, and Guam. The programs of the Sea Grant network work together to help citizens understand, conserve and better utilize America’s coastal, ocean and Great Lakes resources. One of four national strategic priorities through 2013 is to improve the resilience of coastal communities to hazards, including the effects of climate change. NOAA Sea Grant plays local and national roles to inform policy and management, help communities prepare for climate impacts, and support economic resilience and opportunity.
