National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a scientific agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce focused on the conditions of the oceans and the atmosphere. NOAA predicts dangerous weather, charts seas and skies, guides the use and protection of ocean and coastal resources, and conducts research to improve stewardship of the environment.
The data collected worldwide by NOAA researchers aids our understanding of complex climatic systems, as well as ability to forecast changes in these systems. NOAA's research laboratories, Climate Program Office, and research partners conduct a wide range of research on climate systems, to improve their ability to predict climate variation in both the shorter term, and over longer terms like centuries and beyond.
The Climate Program Office manages the competitive research program in which NOAA funds high-priority climate science to advance understanding of Earth's climate system and its atmospheric, oceanic, land, and snow and ice components. The Office supports research that is conducted in regions across the United States, at national and international scales, and globally. (see additional entry)
The NOAA Climate Services Portal (NCS Portal) is designed to enhance the access to climate data and services, timely articles and information, education resources, and tools for engagement and decision-making. (see separate entry for further information).
NOAA's Climate Program Office through an interagency initiative with the U.S. Global Change Research Program operates the U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit, which is hosted by NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information.
