Boston Climate Preparedness Planning Initiative

The Boston Climate Preparedness Planning Initiative is a joint project of the City of Boston, the Boston Redevelopment Authority and the Boston Green Ribbon Commission. Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced on August 20, 2015 that the City of Boston has received $350,000 in funding from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to support the Initiative. The grant is a part of the state's Office of Coastal Zone Management's Coastal Community Resilience Grant Program.

"The City of Boston continues to act on climate adaptation and mitigation through their Climate Ready Boston initiative. After Hurricane Sandy devastated New York City, Boston concentrated its already existing climate action efforts to develop solutions to help the city become more resilient to climate effects, building off of climate pieces in four other city-wide plans. Climate Ready Boston includes four parts: developing consensus around climate projections, a vulnerability assessment, specific resilience strategies, and an implementation plan. The assessment and strategy is scheduled to be published very soon."

Boston will review and develop consensus on local climate change projections and impacts, identify vulnerabilities and develop an initial portfolio of actions to strengthen the resiliency of buildings, neighborhoods and infrastructure. In particular, it will identify ‘critical resiliency focus areas’ and develop concrete solutions for each area. Those solutions may include regulations, financial incentives, technical assistance, design standards and physical infrastructure projects.

The mission of Boston’s Green Ribbon Commission Climate Preparedness Working Group (CPWG) is to support the City of Boston climate preparedness planning process. In 2015, the CPWG helped City to design and launch the Climate Ready Boston project, a comprehensive planning initiative that will generate critical solutions to allow Boston to prosper in the face of long-term climate change impacts.
