Connecticut Executive Order No. 53 - Building code standards for extreme weather
Connecticut EO 53 directs state agencies to develop new building code standards that will strengthen building codes to better protect residential and commercial structures from damage caused by flooding and high winds that accompany extreme weather.
The EO addresses the risks to Connecticut’s highly developed coastline from extreme weather events including hurricanes, storm surge, high winds, blizzards, flooding and sea level rise. It states that buildings can feasibly and cost-effectively be constructed to reduce their vulnerability to flood and wind events, or to mitigate the degree of damage they cause.
The State Building Inspector and the Codes and Standards Committee are to consider changes needed to increase the resilience of structures to flood and wind hazards - and assist in the next revision to the State Building Code in order that it contains increased resiliency standards for new and renovated homes and buildings.
