New York City Zoning Code - Permeable pavement requirements
2007
Since 2007, New York City’s zoning code has required parking lots for community facilities to allow permeable pavements where appropriate. Parking lots with more than 18 spaces or more than 6,000 sq ft must capture stormwater through perimeter plantings and planting islands. The lot must be properly graded to drain runoff to those plantings. Both types of plantings must include trees of a certain diameter and spacing, and all vegetation must be from a list of pre-approved species. The objectives of these zoning requirements are to better manage stormwater on parking lots and reduce urban temperatures by providing shade.

East Hampton, New York Coastal Erosion Overlay District
July 2006
Adopted by the Town of East Hampton, New York in 2006, this ordinance (Town of East Hampton Code, Section 255-3-80) includes provisions, among others, to create a Coastal Erosion Overlay District to protect the town's coastline from the effects of coastal erosion measures (i. e. , projects designed to control or prevent coastal flooding and erosion and adjacent upland areas, including coastal ecosystems) in areas at risk of flooding and erosion. The town's natural resources include wetlands, watercourses, tidal waters, natural drainage areas, watersheds, and water recharge areas, as well as beaches, dunes, bluffs, and other coastal features.

Mitigating New York City's Heat Island with Urban Forestry, Living Roofs, and Light Surfaces

This study uses a regional climate model (MM5) in combination with observed meteorological, satellite, and GIS data to determine the impact of mitigation strategies including urban forestry, living/green roofs, and light surfaces on surface and near-surface air temperature in the New York Metropolitan Region over space and time. The effects of localized changes in landsurface cover in six case study areas are evaluated in the context of regional atmospheric mixing. .

New York State Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy
September 2005
Congress charged each state and territory with developing a wildlife action plan, in order to receive funds through the Wildlife Conservation and Restoration Program and the State Wildlife Grants Program. These proactive plans, known technically as “comprehensive wildlife conservation strategies,” assess the health of each state’s wildlife and habitats, identify the problems they face, and outline the actions that are needed to conserve them over the long term.

People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH) Buffalo was founded in 2005 to serve as a resource to residents in Western New York communities to help provide affordable, resilient housing, create local hiring opportunities for underserved members of the community, and to “advance economic and environmental justice in Buffalo. ” Since its founding the non-profit has established a wide variety of programs that advance these goals, and provides employment opportunities statewide. The Hiring Hall program helps to staff PUSH Green with underemployed and underrepresented members of the Buffalo community - especially people of color and women - to train disadvantaged residents on a variety of different careers, with a focus on the green energy/technology field.

Climate Change and Water Quality in the Great Lakes Basin

This multi-dimensional report from the Great Lakes Water Quality Board of the International Joint Commission is written for a cross-section of science, business, resource management, and policy experts in the Great Lakes region. Section 2 provides an overview of climate change and variability projections for the region, including air temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration, water supply, water levels, ice cover, and water quality. Projected impacts are then provided in Section 3 pertaining to the following sectors: human health, ecosystems and biodiversity, agriculture, fish and wildlife, forests, and recreation and tourism.

Confronting Climate Change in the Great Lakes Region: Impacts on Our Communities and Ecosystems

This report released by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) and the Ecological Society of America examines the potential impacts of climate change upon the various ecosystems of the Great Lakes region. While somewhat dated, it is still highly relevant, and is cited in numerous subsequent impact studies. An updated Executive Summary was also released in 2005, which considered the findings of over 24 additional studies in the region. State summaries are also available on an interactive and comprehensive Union of Concerned Scientists website designed to represent the findings in this report.

National Assessment of Coastal Vulnerability to Sea-Level Rise: Preliminary Results for the Atlantic Coast
1999
One of three national assessments of U. S. coastal regions conducted in the late 1990's, this assessment focused on the Atlantic coastline, while the other two focused on the Gulf Coast and Pacific coastlines. The overall goal of these studies was to identify those portions of the U. S. coastal regions at risk and the nature of that risk (e. g. , inundation, erosion, etc. ). The long-term goal of this study is to predict future coastal changes with a degree of certainty useful for coastal management, following an approach similar to that used to map national seismic and volcanic hazards.

Chesapeake Bay Program's Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC)
The Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) provides scientific and technical guidance to the Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP) on measures to restore and protect the Chesapeake Bay. Since its creation in December 1984, STAC has worked to enhance scientific communication and outreach throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed and beyond. STAC provides scientific and technical advice in various ways, including: technical reports and papers, discussion groups, assistance in organizing merit reviews of CBP programs and projects, technical conferences and workshops, and service by STAC members on CBP subcommittees and workgroups.
