Landmark at Risk: Protecting the Historic Seaport of Annapolis, Maryland

Utilizing GIS tools to overlay flood risk maps with Annapolis’ many historical sites, the interactive web-based resource help users to understand the threat to their community through images and story mapping. Spurred by the state’s 2008 Climate Action Plan, which assessed what approach (protecting, retreating, or abandoning) was most appropriate for coastal communities threatened by sea level rise, this tool brings together experts in planning, architecture, engineering, and historic preservation.

Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s Environmental Justice Toolkit

Framework for Engaging Small- and Medium-Sized Businesses in Maryland on Climate Resilience

From the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), this Framework provides guidance to state and local governments on how to engage with and assist small- to medium-sized businesses interested in enhancing their resilience to climate change. The report offers recommendations on how governments can address the resources and information needs of these businesses, and highlights four key recommendations for engaging small business on climate resilience. C2ES asserts that assisting small and medium businesses in resilience planning protects local economies and is mutually beneficial for the public and private sectors.

Critical Area Coastal Resilience Planning Guide for Maryland

Developed for the Critical Area Commission for the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays, this Planning Guide is designed for local planners, especially those in small communities and towns throughout Maryland, as they develop resiliency plans. The guide is made up of two sections, the first focused on process, and the second presents potential resilience strategies. The town of Oxford, Maryland is used as a case study throughout the first section, which outlines three assessments recommended for communities interested in working to build coastal resilience.

The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by world leaders in 2015 to create collaborative partnerships across and between countries and communities to achieve objectives around economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social inclusion. In 2015, as part of the USA Sustainable Cities Initiative (USA-SCI) program, the City of Baltimore, Maryland was selected as one of three U.S. cities to pilot the implementation of the 17 UN SDGs.

The Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional (CBLP) Certification Program is a voluntary credential for professionals who design, install and maintain sustainable landscapes in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The goal of the certification program is to certify professionals throughout the watershed who can maintain conservation landscapes that help reduce stormwater runoff, in turn benefiting local residents and ecosystems.

GCC: Policy Considerations for the Maryland Commission on Climate Change

This memorandum from the Georgetown Climate Center (GCC) seeks to help Maryland to document the important work it is already doing to prepare for the impacts of climate change and to provide recommendations for additional steps that the state could take, drawing on examples of practices from other states. Climate Adaptation: The State of Practice in U.S. Communities
November 16, 2016
Looking at 17 communities engaged in adaptation, this report examines what communities are doing to address climate risks. It finds that communities are often motivated by extreme climate event and are more focused on reducing their current vulnerabilities to extreme events, compared to addressing future climate impacts. Despite this, there is encouraging evidence that communities can begin addressing climate change risks and overcome barriers to action and implementation. The 17 case studies provide insights into the key components of a well-adapted community.

Kent County, Maryland Climate Change and Sea Level Rise Adaptation Report
September 2016
This report summarizes the climate change impacts occurring in Kent County, Maryland, and recommends adaptation actions for increasing the resilience of residents, county facilities, and operations. The report includes a Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for Kent County which finds that climate change is increasing the risk of localized natural hazards. The assessment describes current and projected climate change impacts including heat, precipitation, sea level rise, and flooding in the region.
