Best Practices for State Wildlife Action Plans - Voluntary Guidance to States for Revision and Implementation

In 2005, Congress mandated that state fish and wildlife agencies develop State Wildlife Action Plans (SWAPs) that identified the species and habitats in greatest conservation need, key threats, and recommended actions - in order to receive federal funding through the State and Tribal Wildlife Grants Program. The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies prepared a report with guidance focused on integrating climate change adaptation planning into SWAPs in 2009 - Voluntary Guidance for States to Incorporate Climate Change into State Wildlife Action Plans and Other Management Plans.

National Park Service Climate Change Action Plan 2012 - 2014

The National Park Service (NPS) Climate Change Action Plan provides guidance to help park managers and staff electively plan for and respond to current and future climate change effects on national park lands. Following on the Climate Change Response Strategy, released in 2010, the Action Plan articulates a set of high priority no-regrets actions the NPS is undertaking, or was committed to undertake, by 2014.

Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts Action Plan: Planning for a Shifting Shoreline and Coastal Storms

The Buzzards Bay National Estuary Program updated their 1991 Buzzards Bay Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP) to implement strategies to reduce the severity of impacts of future storms and sea level rise on the coast and on existing and future coastal development. The Plan includes new or updated goals, objectives, and management solutions to meet the environmental needs for Buzzards Bay and its surrounding watershed throughout the next decade.

This briefing paper provides an overview of California's current hydrology and water management practices, the shifts in the state’s hydrology due to climate change, and the changes in the water resources regulatory framework that are needed to adapt. The current regulatory framework described is based on the premise that the hydrological baseline, with accepted levels of year to year and seasonal variability in water flows, is a constant. California's hydrology is being altered by climate change, and the effects are predicted to become even more pronounced over the next several decades, altering this baseline.

Southeast Florida Regional Climate Action Plan

The Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact was executed by Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Monroe Counties in January 2010 to coordinate mitigation and adaptation activities across county lines in the region. The Compact is a focused collaborative, providing the vision and framework for regional resilience. The Compact calls for the Counties to work cooperatively in order to develop a coordinated response to proposed state climate legislation and policies; to create a Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Action Plan to include mitigation and adaptation strategies; and to meet annually in Regional Climate Summits to mark progress and identify emerging issues.

FHWA INVEST Tool – Infrastructure Resiliency Criteria

The Federal Highway Administration’s INVEST Tool (Tool) provides a collection of voluntary best practices (“criteria”) and associated point values to help transportation agencies and practitioners evaluate and improve the sustainability and climate resilience of their projects and programs. The Tool allows transportation agencies to evaluate the sustainability of their agency practices and projects across the entire transportation lifecycle, by self-assigning points based on how well they have met requirements set out for each particular criterion.
