Stormwater Management Toolkit: Urban Watershed Planning Game

As part of the Stormwater Management Toolkit, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) developed the Urban Watershed Planning Game. This game helps the SFPUC understand community priorities by presenting a diverse group of community members with the task of updating San Francisco’s sewer system. The game fosters the development of green infrastructure solutions that help San Francisco adapt to the impacts of climate change in a financially feasible, community driven manner. This game is a great resource for city planners, watershed managers, public engagement officers, and citizens.

EPA Webcast Series on Climate Change Adaptation for State and Local Governments

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Local Climate and Energy Webcast Series assists local governments as they explore topics related to local government climate change and clean energy efforts. These monthly webcasts highlight EPA resources available to local governments and present examples of successful climate and energy programs and policies implemented locally. Presentations, recordings, and other supplemental materials are available sorted by topic or sorted by date.

Climate Survivor Workbook

This guide is a compilation of activities and resources that were developed and piloted by the Pacific Institute at community meetings, events, and workshops. These activities can be replicated by others to engage a diverse and wide-rage of people in climate adaptation planning. The guide addresses the following topics: What is Climate Change. How does climate change affect us. What can we do to prepare. How can we create more resilient communities. The activities include objectives, directions, prompts, possible modifications, an appendix of pre-designed materials, additional resources, and questions for further discussion.

The International Bridge, Tunnel, and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) hosted a workshop in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy where agency officials shared strategies for operations and emergency management during extreme weather events. At the “Forum on Super Storm Sandy: Adaptation and Resilience” (Forum), agency officials who had been on the front lines of the response and recovery effort discussed lessons-learned with one another and with Florida state officials. The Forum was designed to engage transportation and tolling officials in “building adaptive solutions to climate change.

Climate Communication and Engagement Efforts: The Landscape of Approaches and Strategies

The Resource Innovation Group’s Social Capital Project and Climate Access identified climate communication framing approaches and a variety of theories of social and behavioral change most prevalent in climate change communications and public engagement initiatives. The project researched the main categories of organizations working on climate communication and behavior change projects, the key frames, and focal strategies being pursued by these initiatives.

Community Resilience Toolkit 2.0

The Community Resilience Toolkit 2.0 is a collection of online tools to help users understand local impacts of the climate and energy crisis in their region and what they can do about them. Created by Rooted in Resilience, the tools are designed for individuals, community and nonprofit groups, classrooms, businesses, and municipal planners. The toolkit is comprised of four different documents. Each of these outline activities, and step-by-step instructions.

The first session, 'Adaptation and Security in a Changing Climate', sets the stage with a discussion of how climate-impacts are determined and what types of adaptations must be incorporated into planning at the national, regional, and local levels. The series continues with Session 2: Food and Water Adaptations to Protect Security in a Changing Climate; Session 3: Infrastructure Adaptations in a Changing Climate; Session 4: Public Health Adaptations; and Session 5: Economic Vitality in a Changing Climate.

Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) West Coast Adaptation Peer Exchange

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) West Coast Climate Change Adaptation Peer Exchange gave transportation officials from western states an opportunity to learn more about climate impacts on transportation assets and plan for improved resilience. The participants in the exchange, California DOT (Caltrans), Oregon DOT (ODOT), and Washington State DOT (WSDOT), collaborated on strategies for assessing risks related to climate change, incorporating adaptation into asset management and operations, and communicating about the need for adaptation.
