A Screening Assessment of the Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Mitigation in the Great Lakes and New England Regions

February 2008

This report presents the potential implications of climate change on combined sewer overflow (CSO) mitigation in the Great Lakes and New England Regions. It is not a detailed analysis of individual systems in these regions. The purpose of this assessment was 1) to determine whether the potential implications of climate change on CSOs in these regions warranted further consideration and study, and 2) to evaluate the need for decision support tools and information that would enable combined sewer system (CSS) managers to incorporate the consideration of climate change into their decision making processes.

Coastal Flooding in the Northeast United States Due to Climate Change

December 2007

This report assesses the affects of sea level rise (SLR) on storm surge and flooding in the northeastern United States.   In this study, historical sea level information for storm surge anomalies at five sites in the region (from Massachusetts to New Jersey) was compiled and the impacts of climate change and local sea level effects were then added to this analysis. The change in recurrence intervals of storm surges due to possible SLR scenarios is estimated. Also, the study compares the boundaries of a 100-year coastal storm flooding event in Boston developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with the flooding boundaries of these estimated storm surges for 2005 and 2100 to further prepare for the potential social and economic impacts of climate change on coastal areas.

Ramifications of Climate Change for Chesapeake Bay Hypoxia

December 2007

This paper examines how both climate variability and potential climate change can affect hypoxia in the Chesapeake Bay and can present additional challenges to ongoing ecosystem restoration. It is one of four case studies in a report entitled, "Regional Impacts of Climate Change: Four Case Studies in the United States," that examines impacts of particular interest to different regions of the U. S. Past observations are used to elucidate the multiple influences of climate on hypoxia and its consequences to the Bay ecosystems.

A Discussion of the Potential Impacts of Climate Change on the Shorelines of the Northeastern USA

July 10, 2007

This report, prepared for the 2007 Northeast Climate Impact Assessment (see separate entry), provides a broad overview of how sea-level rise will impact the coast of the northeastern United States. Different possible rates of sea-level rise and the primary impact of shoreline retreat is discussed. The report explains how local features determine the extent of shoreline retreat in a given area and addresses how sea-level rise could affect different ecosystems, including estuaries, salt marshes, and barrier island systems.

Cities Preparing for Climate Change: A Study of Six Urban Regions

May 2007

To continue adaptation efforts for Toronto and provide support to other Canadian cities and municipalities, the Clean Air Partnership made site visits to six municipalities that, at the time, were considered “early adopters” or “early responders” on adaptation and prepared this report on the lessons for other cities from their experiences. The study provides lessons from the experience of six cities that have developed adaptation plans including London, New York, Boston, Halifax, Vancouver, and Seattle.

Potential Climate Change Impacts on Marine Resources of the Northeastern United States

Potential for Shoreline Changes Due to Sea-Level Rise Along the U.S. Mid-Atlantic Region

2007

In 2007, thirteen scientists convened for a two-day meeting to exchange  information and develop a consensus opinion on potential future coastal changes for the mid-Atlantic coast in response to sea-level rise. This 2007 report is the result of this workshop, providing an overview of how sea level rise could impact mid-Atlantic coast landforms, from New York to Virginia. Four different scenarios for sea level rise were considered and applied to specific areas of the Atlantic coast: a) the long-term sea-level rise rate observed over the 20th century would persist over the 21st century; b) the 20th century rate would increase by 2 mm/yr; c) the 20th century rate would increase by 7 mm/yr; and d) sea-level would rise by 2 m over the next few hundred years.
