DOI Advisory Committee on Climate Change and Natural Resource Science

The U. S. Department of Interior (DOI) announced in May 2013 the establishment of a federal advisory committee who will provide guidance about the Interior Department’s climate change adaptation science initiatives. The Advisory Committee on Climate Change and Natural Resource Science will advise the Secretary of the Interior about the USGS National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center and the Department of the Interior Climate Science Centers (CSCs), which are managed by the U. S. Geological Survey.

City of Chicago Utility Cost Disclosure Ordinance

The City of Chicago adopted energy efficiency policies for both commercial and residential buildings to help reduce waste energy from residential and commercial buildings, which accounts for about one-third of the urban heat island effect, in some US cities. This ordinance in combination with the city's energy conservation code and energy benchmarking ordinance seek to enhance energy efficiency in the city's building stock and reduce waste heat from buildings.

Sandy Disaster Relief Appropriations Act

The Sandy Disaster Relief Appropriations Act appropriates $50. 7 billion to reimburse state and local governments for the costs of emergency response and for long-term recovery from the storm. Division B of the Act, entitled the Sandy Recovery Improvement Act of 2013, includes provisions amending the statute that governs federal disaster relief - the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act (Stafford Act). The amendments are designed to streamline the administration of disaster relief funding.

Washington D.C./District of Columbia Stormwater Ordinance - 2013 Rule on Stormwater Management and Soil Erosion and Sediment Control

In 2013, the District Department of the Environment (now D. C. Department of Energy and Environment, or DOEE) released an amended Rule on Stormwater Management and Soil Erosion and Sediment Control to require that major development and redevelopment projects incorporate additional measures to retain stormwater and reduce runoff. The District offers compliance flexibility by allowing for some off-site retention, the ability for developers to pay an in-lieu fee, or the option to buy stormwater retention credits.

Climate Change and "Coast Smart" Construction (Maryland Executive Order 01.01.2012.29)

On behalf of the State of Maryland, Governor Martin O’Malley has signed the Executive Order (01. 01. 2012. 29) Climate Change and “Coast Smart” Construction on December 28, 2012 - a landmark initiative to increase the State’s long term resiliency to storm-related flooding and sea level rise. The Executive Order enacts a number of policy directives, including directing all State agencies to consider the risk of sea level rise, flooding and extreme weather to be taken into account in the construction or reconstruction of all state buildings and facilities - and structures to be elevated two or more feet above the 100-year base flood level.
