This report from the Western Governor's Association, along with the 2006 report, "Water Needs and Strategies for a Sustainable Future," and the 2008 report, "Water Needs and Strategies for a Sustainable Future: Next Steps" includes consensus recommendations to promote the cooperation between western states and federal, local, and private sector partners in addressing the challenges of over-appropriated watersheds, population growth, land use changes, water needs for in-stream uses, and water supply and water management strategies.

Climate Action Plans and Long-Range Transportation Plans in the Pacific Northwest: a review of the state of practice

Using online research and a survey, the authors of this report evaluated if and how agencies in the Pacific Northwest are preparing for climate change in their climate action plans (CAPs). Additionally, the report indicates if the goals and recommendations of CAPs are reflected in long-range transportation planning (LRTP) documents; providing examples of how CAPs can better support transportation planners. This report includes a discussion of projected climate change impacts on surface transportation infrastructure and operations by state.

Climate Change and Risk of Leishmaniasis in North America: Predictions from Ecological Niche Models of Vector and Reservoir Species
January 2010
Leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease spread by the bite of the sandfly, is indigenous to México and the state of Texas, and has begun to expand its range northward. The models developed as part of this study predict that climate change will exacerbate the ecological risk of human exposure to leishmaniasis in areas outside its present range in the United States and, possibly, in parts of southern Canada. Further expansion to the north may be facilitated by climate change as more habitat becomes suitable for the disease's vector and reservoir species.

Maryland Update to the Governor and General Assembly

The report summarizes implementation progress of the Maryland Commission on Climate Change policy recommendations as identified in the state's 2008 Climate Action Plan. The Climate Action Plan contains 19 policy recommendations that focus on climate change adaptation, primarily for sea-level rise and coastal storm surge - from both the Mitigation Working Group's (MWG) and the Adaptation Response Working Groups' (ARWG). For each of the recommendations brief updates are provided, including any institutional, regulatory or legislative actions.

Advancing the Science of Climate Change

Part of the America's Climate Choices suite of studies requested by Congress, this report examines the status of the nation's climate change research efforts and recommends steps to improve and expand current understanding. The report reviews the scientific community's understanding of climate change and its interactions with human and natural systems in 12 areas of interest to decision makers. It identifies advances needed to improve the effectiveness of actions taken to respond to climate change, including actions to limit its magnitude and adapt to its impacts, as well as understanding the causes, mechanisms, and consequences of climate change.

Chicago, Illinois Climate Action Plan Progress Report, 2008-2009: The First Two Years

In 2009, 16 City of Chicago departments and sister agencies developed their individualized climate action work plans. In total, more than 450 initiatives with a direct benefit toward the goals of the Chicago Climate Action Plan were identified and are being coordinated and tracked on a quarterly basis.

Environmental Health Indicators of Climate Change in the United States: Findings from the State Environmental Health Indicator Collaborative

This article, published in Environmental Health Perspectives, presents research on the public health impacts of climate change. The report describes surveillance indicators for practitioners and policy makers that include climate-sensitive health outcomes and environmental and vulnerability indicators, as well as mitigation, adaptation, and policy indicators of climate change. The report's environmental health indicators can serve as inputs into human health vulnerability assessments and be used in public health actions.

Health Problems Heat Up: Climate Change and the Public's Health

This report, from Trust for America's Health (TFAH), examines the human health effects of climate change and the role public health authorities must play in preventing and preparing for further climate-related damage. It also explores the needs of state and local health departments as they set out to conduct climate change needs assessments and provides a framework to develop strategic plans to prevent and prepare for climate change. TFAH makes policy recommendations pertaining to increased action from federal, state, and local governments.
