Virginia Governor's Commission on Climate Change Final Report: A Climate Change Action Plan

December 15, 2008

Executive Order 59, signed by Governor Kaine in 2007, established the Governor's Commission on Climate Change. The Commission was charged with creating a Climate Change Action Plan that would evaluate expected impacts of climate change on Virginia's natural resources, public health, and the economic impact on the industries of agriculture, forestry, tourism, and insurance. In addition the Plan was to identify strategies to prepare for the projected impacts of climate change on the state.   The Action Plan discusses the overall climate effects on natural systems, such as ecosystems and the state's primary fish stocks, and the effects on human health.

Adaptation of Transportation Infrastructure to Global Climate Change Effects: Implications for Design and Implementation

December 2008

This appendix to a Peer Workshop report issued by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is a short overview of the need to adapt transportation planning and construction practices to the effects of climate change. It summarizes likely climate change impacts to transportation infrastructure. Topics covered include prioritizing the use of resources, performing environmental impact reviews, including climate impacts in the design and construction of infrastructure projects, and the need to account for climate change in maintenance and operations.

Houston-Galveston Area, Texas Council Foresight Panel on Environmental Effects Report

December 2008

The Houston Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) established an expert panel to develop recommendations for local governments to adapt to climate change impacts and the associated environmental effects on the region. This Foresight Panel on Environmental Effects was comprised of experts in climate change and local infrastructure planning. The Panel in turn produced this comprehensive report which reviews current and projected climate impacts and provides specific adaptation strategies.

Sustainable Stormwater Management Plan 2008 for New York City

December 2008

The 2008 Sustainable Stormwater Management Plan was New York City's first comprehensive analysis of the costs and benefits of alternative green infrastructure methods for controlling stormwater. The product of an interagency task force, this plan provides a framework for testing, assessing, and implementing small installations to control stormwater at its source, such as source controls, green infrastructure, low impact development, best management practices, or BMPs.

Prince Edward Island and Climate Change: A Strategy for Reducing the Impacts of Global Warming

As an island with a highly erodible sandstone bedrock, a sandy shoreline with many estuaries and marshes, and the ongoing submergence of its coast, Prince Edward Island has been identified as one of the areas most vulnerable to sea level rise in Canada. This strategy from the Government of Prince Edward Island presents the current and projected climate change impacts on the island, while delineating mitigation measures across many sectors, as well as general adaptation strategies.

National Capital Region Climate Change Report

Climate Change and Extreme Heat Events

This article, from the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, reviews major epidemiological risk factors associated with mortality from extreme heat exposure and discusses future drivers of heat-related mortality, including a warming climate, the urban heat island effect, and an aging population. The report discusses aspects of an effective public health response, including steps for creating heat response plans, strategies to combat urban heat island effect, the use of remote sensing and GIS methodologies to locate vulnerable areas, and the importance of effective communications strategies.

Florida's Energy and Climate Change Action Plan

October 15, 2008

This action plan was developed by the Governor's Action Team on Energy and Climate Change in October 2008. The plan contains 50 separate policy recommendations for mitigation and adaptation, and is part of the Phase 2 deliverables required under Executive Order 07-128. Chapter 8 of the plan provides an overview of current and projected impacts, as well as a planning framework for adaptation developed by the Adaptation Technical Working Group (TWG). The chapter also recommends early action items for policymakers to consider in the following areas: Research, Comprehensive Planning, Protection of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, Water Resources Management, Built Environment, Infrastructure and Community Protection, and Public Education and Outreach.
