Delaware 2017 Coastal Inundation Maps

2017

Delaware's Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) and the scientists from Delaware Coastal Programs have developed Sea Level Rise (SLR) inundation maps for the state as an online interactive tool. The maps show the possible impacts of inundation based on various SLR scenarios for Delaware’s waterways and watersheds.  The maps are a representation of inundation based on local Mean Higher High Water (MHHW), which is the long-term average of the higher of the daily high tides.

Satellite Beach Sea-Level Rise Comprehensive Plan Recommendations

In the fall of 2009, the City of Satellite Beach, Florida, authorized a project designed to assess municipal vulnerability to rising sea level and initiate the planning process to properly mitigate impacts. The city has a total area of 4. 3 square miles, in which 2. 9 square miles of it is land and 1. 4 square miles of it (31. 94%) is water. The City’s highest elevation barely exceeds 20 ft (6. 1 m) and is associated with the Atlantic Ocean coastal dune system, which otherwise averages about +15 ft (4.

Coastal Inundation Toolkit

The Coastal Inundation Toolkit was developed by the Digital Coast Partnership Group to help communities understand and address coastal inundation issues - where water covers what is normally dry land. Information and resources are organized into 5 stages: understanding coastal inundation, identifying community risks and vulnerabilities, creating inundation maps, communicating risks and vulnerability, and discovering what others are doing to address inundation. For each of these 5 areas, explanations and guidance are provided with links to the specific resources available from Digital Coast to support that specific step in the process, making this a user-friendly way to support assessments and planning for sea level rise and extreme weather events.

Coastal Adaptation to Sea level rise Tool (COAST)

Developed at the University of Southern Maine with funding from the EPA, the COAST program predicts damages from varying amounts of sea level rise (SLR) and storms of various intensities, and evaluates relative benefits and costs of response strategies. Although it is a technical tool, COAST can connect the technical with the social, political, and economic realities of local adaptation. Stakeholders are involved when they parametrize the model. Being entirely driven by the participants, the tool uses locally derived data on vulnerable assets such as real estate, economic activity, infrastructure, and natural resources.

The Likelihood of Shore Protection Data Set

2009

This site provides the GIS data that was used for the study "State and Local Governments Plan for Development of Most Land Vulnerable to Rising Sea Level along the U. S. Atlantic Coast," published by James Titus. The GIS data are available in three formats: grid, polygon shape files, and vector shape files. This data identifies shoreline development and areas that will be vulnerable to sea level rise. .

Recommended Sea Level Rise Scenarios for Delaware

December 2009

The Recommended Sea Level Rise Scenarios were established by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) Sea Level Rise (SLR) Technical Workgroup to     support the development of the DNREC Sea Level Rise Policy. The SLR Technical Workgroup is comprised of scientists from DNREC, University of Delaware, Partnership for the Delaware Estuary and the Center for the Inland Bays. The Workgroup determined the Delaware SLR scenarios by employing published expert summaries of existing data and predictions from national and international panels and federal agencies.

Smart Growth for Coastal and Waterfront Communities

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the International City/County Management Association, and Rhode Island Sea Grant, jointly released "Smart Growth for Coastal and Waterfront Communities," intended for planners, local government officials, developers, residents, and other stakeholders. Developed in consultation with the national Smart Growth Network, the interagency guide builds on the network's ten smart growth principles to create coastal and waterfront-specific strategies for development.

An Adaptation Portfolio for the United States Coastal and Marine Environment

June 2009

This report presents a suite of federal, state and local policy actions to enhance the resilience of human and natural systems to the effects of climate change and variability for marine and coastal environments. Strategies discussed include: investments in habitat restoration, permitting decisions under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, the purchase of coastal lands, controls for reducing non-point and point source pollution upstream of intertidal estuaries, the inspection and prevention of invasive species, marine protected areas (MPAs), incentive‐based fishery management policies, and in general a better definition of rights to marine and coastal resources that creates stewardship incentives.

The Socio-Economic Impact of Sea Level Rise in the Galveston Bay Region

June 2009

This report seeks to illustrate the impact that climate change can have on communities in the Galveston Bay region. It focuses on two scenarios of sea-level rise,. 69 meters and 1. 5 meters, and the associated socio-economic impact on the Galveston Bay area for the next 100 years. For each of the model scenarios estimates are given for the impact on displaced populations; the number of buildings impacted and building-related economic losses; industrial, hazardous, superfund, solid waste sites; and water treatment plants.
