Buffalo, New York Medical Microgrid - NY Prize
Microgrid projects selected for funding through the NYSERDA NY Prize competition, including a project serving the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, demonstrate how states can fund microgrid pilot projects and evaluate the resilience benefits delivered by these types of projects. The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) secured $1 million in funding from the New York Energy and Research Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) NY Prize to deploy a microgrid project to serve vital medical facilities in Buffalo, New York. The project covers nine health care, life science research, and education facilities including New York’s only freestanding pediatric health facility. The project also serves portions of the adjacent Fruit Belt low income residential neighborhood, which shares common electric infrastructure with the medical campus. BNMC’s proposal emphasized the importance of enabling the health and cancer research facilities to maintain 100 percent service quality during extended power interruptions. The proposal also stressed engaging with surrounding communities to identify priority investment areas, building on existing neighborhood assets by planning a multipurpose community center, advancing a collaborative workforce development strategy, and establishing a land bank program for example. The proposal used the Industrial Economics, Inc. (IEc) model to evaluate the costs and benefits of the microgrid project for critical services. The state of New York created the competition to spur microgrid development in light of climate change impacts, and called for a variety for microgrid designs involving Combined Heat and Power (CHP), renewables, energy storage, alternative fuel/generation, and controllable loads. The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus microgrid project was selected for funding as part of an initiative to upgrade and redevelop the campus and its surrounding neighborhoods.

New Mexico Climate Strategy - Initial Recommendations and Status Update

The Climate Strategy from New Mexico’s Interagency Climate Change Task Force presents a suite of policies that integrate climate change mitigation and adaptation throughout New Mexico’s state government programs and operations. It serves as a strategic guide for the state to achieve the mitigation and adaptation goals as ordered in Governor Lujan Grisham’s Executive Order 2019-003 mandating lower carbon emissions and adaptations to limit climate change impacts. The report describes New Mexico’s adaptation progress across state agencies and the focal sectors of public health, emergency preparedness, and water supply.

Coast Resilience Solutions for East Boston and Charlestown, Massachusetts

East Boston and Charlestown, Massachusetts are coastal communities that face significant vulnerability to sea-level rise and coastal flooding. Created with the support of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Barr Foundation, this report describes local climate risks, and provides short- and long-term resilience strategies for these areas. This is the first neighborhood coastal resilience plan to be implemented from the Climate Ready Boston plan and initiative.

Social Cohesion: The Secret Weapon in the Fight for Equitable Climate Resilience

From the Center for American Progress, this report discusses the role that social cohesion plays in preparedness and response to climate change induced extreme weather events, with a focus on the vulnerability of low-income communities. Methods to integrate community resilience into climate resilience, and specific recommendations to foster climate and social resilience are provided. In addition to the value of social cohesion in climate resilience, the report details how addressing the unique housing, economic and health vulnerabilities of low-income groups will in turn have benefits for the community at large.

Encroaching Tides: How Sea Level Rise and Tidal Flooding Threaten U.S. East and Gulf Coast Communities over the Next 30 Years

This report from the Union of Concerned Scientists describes the threat of tidal flooding in the East Coast and Gulf regions and offers steps that communities can take to adapt. The report makes the case that tidal flooding, currently just considered a nuisance, could become a daily or weekly occurrence, redefining how and where people along the coast “live, work, play, and move through their daily lives. " Data was collected in 52 locations to provide projections for sea level rise and tidal flooding in the region until 2045.

Grand Rapids, Michigan Climate Resiliency Report
December 2013
The West Michigan Environmental Action Council, in partnership with the Grand Rapids Office of Energy and Sustainability, investigated climate change resiliency for Grand Rapids, Michigan with city grant funding in 2012. The outcome of the study was the identification of key impacts across community sectors in Grand Rapids, and recommendations for managing these impacts through adaptation and resiliency planning. Drawing on interviews from local experts from a wide range of sectors, the report uses the triple bottom line framework to analyze the social, economic, and environmental aspects of climate resiliency.

City of Waveland, Mississippi Local Hazard Mitigation Plan
March 2013
The City of Waveland, Mississippi developed this Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) 2013 update to document Waveland’s hazard mitigation planning process, and to identify relevant vulnerabilities and strategies the City will use to increase resiliency and sustainability. Waveland was "ground zero" of Hurricane Katrina's landfall on August 29, 2005. The city received massive damage and is still in the process of recovering and rebuilding.

This study identified the range and quantity of ecosystem services within the Pine Island Sound region. Pine Island Sound is located in Lee County, Florida, lying between Pine Island and the barrier islands of Sanibel Island, Captiva Island, North Captiva Island and Cayo Costa, which separate the Sound from the Gulf of Mexico.
