Safeguarding California Plan: 2018 Update

California’s Climate Adaptation Strategy 2018 Update describes the state’s progress in climate adaptation and presents an actionable plan for the near future. Building on the 2009 California Adaptation Strategy and the 2014 Safeguarding California Plan, the 2018 report is directed by Assembly Bill 1482 (2015-16) to update the state’s adaptation strategy every three years.

Southeast Florida Regional Compact: Climate Action Plan - 2014 Municipal Implementation Survey
December 2014
The Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC), on behalf of the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, has administered the Regional Climate Action Plan (RCAP) 2014 Municipal Implementation Survey, compiling climate-related ordinances, resolutions, regulations and administrative policy information from the 108 municipalities in Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe, and Palm Beach Counties, Florida. The data collected from this survey will allow the Compact and ISC to create a database on the Compact’s official website highlighting municipal work in mitigating and adapting to climate change impacts, and will allow for peer-to-peer knowledge and resource sharing.

Surfer's Point Managed Shoreline Retreat Project
2011
The City of Ventura, California, has had ongoing erosion at Surfer's Point, a popular surfing spot adjacent to the mouth of the Ventura River. A California State Park bike path along the shoreline and an adjacent County Fairground parking lot have also experienced frequent damage from erosion. Local stakeholders collectively approved a plan to move the parking lot, pedestrian path, and bike path away from the tideline, instead of building a seawall or adding other armoring, which was projected to permanently damage the beach and surf break.

New York Model Local Laws to Increase Resilience (Chapter 3: Coastal Shoreline Protection Measures)
June 2019
In June 2019, the New York Department of State completed a set of model local laws to increase resilience as part of its required actions under the State’s Community Risk and Resiliency Act (CCRA). The model laws are meant to inform municipalities who want to adapt their own resiliency measures. Five categories of model laws are included in the model, which is divided into five corresponding chapters. The third chapter addresses coastal shoreline protection measures, including coastal setbacks and erosion control districts.

Elevated Floating Bridge on Washington State Route 520
Spring 2016
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is reconstructing the Evergreen Point floating bridge, which runs over Lake Washington along State Route 520 (SR 520) near Seattle, to better accommodate varying winds and storms. The new design will be elevated, which will better protect drivers and the road from waves and storms, and the pontoons that allow the bridge to float will be designed to withstand higher winds. In its climate impacts vulnerability assessment, WSDOT has recognized that high winds could increase as a result of climate change and more extreme weather events.

Sierra Climate Change Toolkit - 3rd Edition
2014
The Sierra Climate Change toolkit addresses climate change across the Sierra Nevada region of California, with localized strategies for emissions reductions and adaptation. The report describes climate change impacts in the Sierra, as well as recent regulations, policy directions, and incentives to reduce emissions and adapt. Adaptation strategies are outlined for water and watershed management, wildlife and habitats, forestry, wildfire, and City and County land-use planning. This 3rd edition from the Sierra Nevada Alliance expands its focus from previous versions with more strategic detail, case studies and further support for the development of an adaptation framework that works within existing planning processes throughout the Sierra.

Jean Lafitte Tomorrow - Town Resiliency Plan
April 2013
The Town of Jean Lafitte, Louisiana created a comprehensive resiliency plan that reflects its “citizen’s shared vision of resilience,” as developed through a community-based stakeholder engagement process. Defining near- and long-term goals and objectives and explicit policy recommendations, the plan is a roadmap to resiliency for the Town’s economic, social, and ecological systems. The plan intends to preserve local bayou character and culture while reducing Jean Lafitte’s vulnerability to climate change related impacts such as flooding, sea level rise, and hurricanes.

Climate and Health - Understanding the Risk: An Assessment of San Francisco’s Vulnerability to Extreme Heat Events
2013
The San Francisco Department of Public Health was awarded funding by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to conduct an environmental health assessment of vulnerability to heat waves and air quality. This report provides an overview of the health department’s study of heat distribution, and predictions of neighborhoods that are especially vulnerable to extreme heat in San Francisco, California. The assessment will inform climate change adaptation planning efforts including a heat wave disaster response plan.

This report aims to provide answers to the question: “What will it take to create a climate change movement that engages everyone. ” In doing so, the Environmental Support Center intends to contribute to creating a more participatory, inclusive climate change movement in the U. S. with the full engagement of poor communities and communities of color.

Learning Collaborative for Multifamily Housing Resilience, New York City, New York
April 2013
New York City’s Learning Collaborative for Multifamily Housing Resilience demonstrates how cities can partner with community development stakeholders to conduct vulnerability assessments that enhance the resilience of low-income communities to climate disasters. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, approximately 20% of the city’s public housing stock was damaged by flood waters, due in part to the placement of high concentrations of subsidized developments in surge-affected areas.
