Potential Increases in Hurricane Damage in the United States: Implications for the Federal Budget
June 2016
As requested by the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on the Budget, this report analyzes the relationship between climate change and increased hurricane damage. In its analysis, CBO estimates annual federal spending for relief and recovery as a percentage of expected hurricane damage. It identifies three different strategies to help reduce the burden on federal aid: limiting greenhouse gas emissions, shifting more costs to state and local governments and private entities, and investing in structural changes to reduce vulnerability to hurricanes.

Puyallup Tribe Climate Change Impact Assessment and Adaptation Options

The Pullayup Tribe of Indians, from the Puget Sound area of Washington State, have completed a climate impact assessment and adaptation strategy for the natural resources in the area on which they depend. This report combines the latest climate knowledge for the region with input from Tribal staff and members, and presents primary projected climate impacts for the Tribe and surrounding ecosystems, as well as strategic actions to build climate resilience.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) manual Highways in the River Environment - Floodplains, Extreme Events, Risk, and Resilience provides technical guidance to assist transportation agencies in assessing vulnerabilities of assets and facilities to climate change and extreme events occurring in riverine environments. It includes new information on how to account for changing precipitation conditions including more frequent and extreme weather events that may affect transportation infrastructure and drainage systems in riverine environments, consisting of rivers and streams, lakes, wetlands, and other natural features conveying water.

Supporting Local Climate Change Adaptation: Where we are and where we need to go

Local governments are on the front line of efforts to address climate-related impacts. Recognizing this, there is a growing movement to develop and deliver tools, resources, and services to support local communities’ climate adaptation initiatives. There is, however, limited understanding of what specific types of resources exist and how well these resources match the needs of local practitioners.

Rhode Island Special House Commission to Study Economic Risk Due to Flooding and Sea Level Rise - Final Report

In June 2015, the Rhode Island resolution H-5478 created an 11 member special legislative study Commission whose purpose was to study and make recommendations concerning the economic risks relating to, and resulting from, sea rise and flooding in Rhode Island, and who would report back to the General Assembly by January of 2016.

Global Climate Research Program (USGCRP) Climate and Health Assessment delineates climate-related health impacts in the United States - building on the USGCRP’s 2014 National Climate Assessment. The report/online interactive website provides a comprehensive assessment of observed and projected health impacts from climate change, discusses the climate causal pathways while providing explicit scientific support, identifies emerging issues, and recognizes particular impacts on vulnerable populations.

Maryland Climate and Health Profile
April 2016
The Maryland Climate and Health Profile report details current and future impacts of climate change on public health in Maryland. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) and the University of Maryland School of Public Health have identified adverse health outcomes that are projected to be exacerbated across the state using historical climate data along with health data - providing the first quantitative estimate of how extreme events are affecting the public health in Maryland, up to 2040.

Louisville Urban Heat Management Study

The first of its kind by a major U.S. city, this report educates neighborhood and city decision makers on the impacts that rising temperatures have on public health, and provides recommendations for addressing Louisville’s urban heat problem.

U.S. DHS Casco Bay Region Climate Change Resiliency Assessment

As a part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)’s Regional Resiliency Assessment Program (RRAP) - this research focuses on the local and regional impacts of climate change in the Casco Bay area, the most developed and populous region in Maine. The report focuses primarily on vulnerabilities that may affect the region’s ability to maintain its critical infrastructure systems, and provides corresponding Resilience Enhancement Options that DHS and other partners may utilize in climate adaptation planning.

California State Route 37 Stewardship Study
February 2016
The University of California Davis Road Ecology Center undertook a stewardship study to assess the risk to California State Route 37 (SR 37) from sea-level rise. SR 37 passes near San Francisco Bay, connecting Interstate 80 and Highway 101. The road corridor and surrounding wetlands are threatened by sea-level rise and flooding. The road bed sits below sea level at its lowest elevation and is likely to experience erosion, flooding during storms, and inundation due to sea-level rise. The State Road 37 Stewardship Study (Study) included a stakeholder process and technical analyses to determine possible future solutions to reduce the vulnerability of the highway to climate impacts.
