A Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment for Focal Resources of the Sierra Nevada

February 2014

In collaboration with the U. S. Forest Service and the California Landscape Conservation Cooperative (CA LCC), EcoAdapt brought together 30 experts to conduct climate change vulnerability assessments on 27 focal resources (including ecosystems, species populations, and ecosystem services) across the Sierra Nevada region of California and Nevada. The results from this assessment are intended to help resource managers and stakeholders develop and prioritize adaptation strategies to conserve these resources as climate change impacts the region.

The Economic Benefits of Green Infrastructure: A Case Study of Lancaster, PA

February 2014

This case study analyzes the Green Infrastructure Plan released by Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 2011 and estimates quantified benefits for the Plan over a 25-year scenario.The study finds that green infrastructure provides $2.8 million in energy, air quality, and climate related benefits annually, reduced gray infrastructure capital costs by $120 million, and reduced wastewater pumping and treatment costs by $661,000 a year, easily exceeding the costs of implementing green infrastructure.

Central Hardwoods Ecosystem Vulnerability Assessment and Synthesis: A Report from the Central Hardwoods Climate Change Response Framework Project

February 2014

This report was prepared by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s Central Hardwoods Climate Change Response Framework Project in conjunction with the Northern Research Station of the U. S. Forest Service (USFS). Assessing the ecosystem vulnerability to climate change of nine natural community types in the Central Hardwoods Region, the document uses forest model projections and projections for wildfires, invasive species, and diseases. This assessment evaluates the vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems in the Central Hardwoods Region of Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri to a range of future climates.

In February 2014, Sustainable Jersey launched the New Jersey Resiliency Network, a program that helps communities access technical and financial resources to address long-term recovery and resiliency issues for post-Sandy municipalities in New Jersey. The Network was formed in response to heavily-impacted towns requesting hands-on guidance and support for recovery and resiliency.

Coastal Flood Damage and Adaptation Costs Under 21st Century Sea Level Rise

February 2014

Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, this paper presents estimates of future coastal flood damages and adaptation costs globally. The study, led by the Berlin-based think-tank Global Climate Forum (GCF) presents, for the first time, comprehensive global simulation results on future flood damages to buildings and infrastructure in coastal flood plains. Coastal flood damages are expected to increase significantly during the 21st century due to both rising sea levels and population and economic growth in the coastal zone.

Maryland Climate Change and Coast Smart Construction Infrastructure Siting and Design Guidelines

January 31, 2014

In December 2012, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley signed an Executive Order (EO) entitled “Climate Change and ‘Coast Smart’ Construction,” requiring state agencies to consider risks of coastal flooding and sea-level rise in state capital budget projects, and requiring the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to develop guidelines for the siting and design of infrastructure and other projects. Pursuant to the EO, in January 2014, the DNR-led Climate Change and Coast Smart Construction Working Group published “Coast Smart” Guidelines that provide recommendations to institutionalize consideration of coastal flooding and sea-level rise in planning and constructing all new or rehabilitated state structural and infrastructure projects, as well as state-funded private projects.

California Energy Commission Integrated Energy Policy Report

January 15, 2014

The California Energy Commission (CEC) 2013 Integrated Energy Policy Report was adopted January 15, 2014.  The report includes an assessment of climate change risks to energy supply in the state and finds that climate change is likely to compromise electricity supplies, particularly during temperature spikes when demand for air conditioning will be high. The main effects on energy supply include less electricity output from thermal power plants, reduced capacity of the transmission and distribution infrastructure to deliver electricity, damage to energy infrastructure, and changes in the availability and timing of renewable energy resources, such as hydroelectric power.

New York State Bridge Scour Program

January 2014

New York has announced a program to upgrade 105 critical bridges across the state by repairing existing scour damage and increasing resilience to future damage from floods and extreme weather events.   The Bridge Scour Program will ensure that the essential transportation infrastructure remains safe and provides access for emergency responders during the severe weather events that have become more common in New York and may further increase in frequency and severity under future climate conditions.

Reimagining New York for a New Reality - Transportation Investments

January 7, 2014

In January 2014 during the State of the State address, New York’s Governor Cuomo announced a plan to invest $17 billion to rebuild New York’s infrastructure, including transportation systems, more resiliently in light of increasingly frequent extreme weather events. The comprehensive rebuilding program includes major reconstruction of the transit system, renovations to many old bridges, a new extensive weather detection system, and creation of a fuel reserve and backup power for gas stations along critical routes.
