Global Risks 2014, Ninth Edition features an analysis of a survey of over 700 leaders and decision-makers from the World Economic Forum’s global multi-stakeholder community on 31 selected global risks. The report highlights the interconnected risks with the potential to have systemic consequences in the geopolitical, socio-economic and digital spheres. The top five global risks identified in the survey were income disparity, extreme weather events, unemployment and underemployment, climate change and cyber-attacks.

Alaska Highway Study: Groundwater Flow, Permafrost Degradation, and Transportation Infrastructure Stability

The Alaska University Transportation Center (AUTC) of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, supported a research project to study the effects of groundwater flow on permafrost degradation and resulting road instability. The stability of permafrost below roadways and embankments is increasingly affected by warming surface temperatures caused by climate change, but may also be affected by heat transfer from groundwater flow. Studies have shown that groundwater flow can accelerate permafrost degradation by several orders of magnitude compared to thaw caused by heat transfer from the atmosphere alone.

Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Study for the City of Los Angeles, California

From the University of Southern California (USC) Sea Grant Program, this vulnerability assessment is a summary of initial research on the potential impacts of sea level rise on Los Angeles’s resources and population, coastal and shoreline assets. The report contains the findings of a coastal vulnerabilities study, as well as the results of physical, social and economic vulnerability assessment studies that were commissioned by the City and USC Sea Grant. In the final section, a suite of adaptation measures for sea level rise is provided, along with several recommendations for moving forward.

Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Study for the City of Los Angeles – Transportation Assets

The University of Southern California Sea Grant Program completed a Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Study for the City of Los Angeles that summarizes initial research on the potential impacts of sea-level rise on Los Angeles’s coastal and shoreline assets, including the Port of Los Angeles, the Pacific Coast Highway and other significant coastal roads. The study identifies the Los Angeles (LA) communities and infrastructure most threatened, and offers a suite of adaptation measures including several specific recommendations for safeguarding transportation assets.

Grand Rapids, Michigan Climate Resiliency Report
December 2013
The West Michigan Environmental Action Council, in partnership with the Grand Rapids Office of Energy and Sustainability, investigated climate change resiliency for Grand Rapids, Michigan with city grant funding in 2012. The outcome of the study was the identification of key impacts across community sectors in Grand Rapids, and recommendations for managing these impacts through adaptation and resiliency planning. Drawing on interviews from local experts from a wide range of sectors, the report uses the triple bottom line framework to analyze the social, economic, and environmental aspects of climate resiliency.

Arlington, Virginia Watershed Retrofit Study
December 2013
Completed in December, 2013, Arlington County, VA produced a Watershed Retrofit Study and plans with the purpose of strengthening the resiliency of its stormwater management systems to climate change. Arlington developed a County-wide project inventory by surveying all of the County's watersheds to find space for small stormwater facilities. This study informed the City of Arlington’s Stormwater Master Plan, which was adopted in Sept. 2014.

Puerto Rico State of the Climate 2010-2013: Assessing Puerto Rico’s Social-Ecological Vulnerabilities in a Changing Climate

Puerto Rico’s State of the Climate report is a comprehensive climate change vulnerability assessment for Puerto Rico as of 2013. It is comprised of three individual assessment reports focused on climate change impacts to Geophysical and Chemical Science, Ecology and Biodiversity, and the Economy and Society of the island territory. The overall assessment concludes that the coastal communities of Puerto Rico, critical infrastructure, economic development, tourism, natural resources and biodiversity, and cultural and historic resources are all vulnerable to climate change.
