Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center
The Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center is one of nine regional Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CASCs) under the Department of the Interior (DOI) managed by the U. S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Climate Adaptation Science Center. The mission of the Centers and National CASC is to "deliver science to help fish, wildlife, water, land, and people adapt to a changing climate. " CASCs provide the tools that managers need to develop and implement strategies that address the impacts of climate change on natural and cultural resources.

Social and Environmental Research Institute (SERI)
The Social and Environmental Research Institute (SERI) conducts applied research on a broad range of social and environmental issues, with a focus in three primary categories: public participation and decision making; human dimensions of risk and environment; and vulnerability and environmental change. While much of their historic work applied these research themes to oil spills and nuclear energy, many current projects apply the institute's expertise to climate change and adaptation.

Water Equity Network
The Water Equity Network, launched by the U. S. Water Alliance in September 2020, encourages and facilitates collaboration between water utilities, community organizations, environmental groups, and individuals to address water equity issues at the local level. The Water Alliance defines water equity as “when all communities have access to safe, clean, affordable drinking water and wastewater services; are resilient in the face of floods, drought, and other climate risks; have a role in decision-making processes related to water management in their communities; and share in the economic, social, and environmental benefits of water systems.

Water Infrastructure and Resiliency Finance Center (EPA)
The EPA's Water Infrastructure and Resiliency Finance Center provides financial advice to communities for planning, design, and construction decisions related to water utility infrastructure. Founded in January, 2015, the Center seeks to promote effective use of federal funding programs and innovative procurement and partnership strategies, among other goals. The center supports a government-wide effort to increase infrastructure investment and promote economic growth.

Water Research Foundation
With a mission of advancing the science of water, the Water Research Foundation is a member-supported, international, nonprofit organization that sponsors research to enable water utilities, public health agencies, and other professionals to provide safe and affordable drinking water to consumers. This foundation sponsors a research program that is responsive to the needs of the water supply community; identifies the practical benefits of research findings and delivers this knowledge to stakeholders throughout the water supply community; and cultivates partnerships with organizations around the world to leverage funding and share expertise.

Governor Timothy M. Kaine established the Governor's Commission on Climate Change in December 2007. The commission was assembled to prepare a plan for Virginia that identifies ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) Center for Coastal Resources Management
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) Center for Coastal Resources Management (CCRM) develops and supports integrated and adaptive management of coastal zone resources. To fulfill this mission, the Center undertakes research, provides advisory service, and conducts outreach education. Within its broader mission, the Center has specific tasks to support Virginia’s wetlands and shoreline management programs.

Virginia Sea Grant
Virginia Sea Grant (VASG) facilitates research, educational, and outreach activities promoting sustainable management of marine resources. The overall goal of VASG is to define and help resolve emerging problems at local, regional, and national scales, as well as to provide impartial information to all who use or manage marine resources. VASG aims to foster integration of extension, education, communication, and research functions to achieve science-to-management impacts, technology transfer, and the use of science by decision-makers, citizens, and students.

Washington Sea Grant serves communities, industries, and the people of Washington state, the Pacific Northwest and the nation through research, education and outreach by: 1) Identifying and addressing important marine issues; 2) Providing better tools for management of the marine environment and use of its resources; and 3) Initiating and supporting strategic partnerships within the marine community. Washington Sea Grant-sponsored research maximizes the productive use of marine resources while preserving and helping to restore essential qualities of a healthy marine environment.
