Literature Synthesis on Climate Change Implications for Water and Environmental Resources
September 2013
This report synthesizes regional studies on the implications of climate change on Bureau of Reclamation operations and activities in 17 Western States. Specifically, the report addresses past and projected effects of climate change on hydrology and water resources. The report outlines implications for the key resource areas the Bureau considers in its planning processes for each of the Bureau's five regions: Pacific Northwest, Mid-Pacific, Lower Colorado, Upper Colorado, and Great Plains.

Colorado HB 13-1293: Creates climate change position in executive branch
May 28, 2013
Colorado 2013 House Bill 13-1293 required the appointment by the executive branch of a climate change position to assess climate change issues in the state, as well as an annual climate vulnerability assessment to be provided by state agencies.

USGS Integrated Watershed Scale Response to Global Change in Selected Basins Across the United States

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has utilized water availability models to project local-level climate change impacts in 14 water basins. To determine the sensitivity and potential effect of long-term climate change on the freshwater resources of the U. S. , the USGS Global Change study, “An integrated watershed scale response to global change in selected basins across the United States” was started in 2008 and published its results in 2012. The long-term goal of this study is to provide the foundation for hydrologically based climate change studies across the nation.

Boulder County, Colorado Climate Change Preparedness Plan

The Boulder County Climate Change Preparedness Plan was prepared by Stratus Consulting for Boulder County Commissioner’s Sustainability Office. The plan is aimed at improving the resilience of the county and its municipalities to the vulnerabilities of climate change. Innovative Approaches for Adapting to Water Variability in the West
May 2012
This brief reviews three approaches that communities are pursuing to adapt to climate change:
- New Mexico's Active Water Resource Management program, which put rules into place that allow for temporary water use changes in real time in case of drought.
- The Water Utility Climate Alliance (WUCA), which was founded by water managers concerned by a gap in climate assessment and adaptation science needed to support their decisions.
- Colorado's Joint Front Range Climate Change Vulnerability Study, which brings together the state and water utilities to assess climate change's impact on local water availability.

Analysis of Drought Impacts on Electricity Production in the Western and Texas Interconnections of the United States

Adaptation Case Studies in the Western United States

From the Georgetown Climate Center, this report contains two case studies from the Western United States that explore water shortages in the West, water rights along the Colorado River, and the protection of an endangered ground-dwelling bird: the greater sage grouse. SECURE Water Act Section 9503-Reclamation Climate Change and Water 2016

This report is prepared in fulfillment of the requirements within section (§) 9503 of the SECURE Water Act and provides an assessment of climate change impacts on the quantity of water resources located in each major U.S. Bureau of Reclamation river basin. The eight river basins identified include the Colorado, Columbia, Klamath, Missouri, Upper Rio Grande and Pecos, Sacramento - San Joaquin, and the Truckee - Carson.
