Elevated Floating Bridge on Washington State Route 520
Spring 2016
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is reconstructing the Evergreen Point floating bridge, which runs over Lake Washington along State Route 520 (SR 520) near Seattle, to better accommodate varying winds and storms. The new design will be elevated, which will better protect drivers and the road from waves and storms, and the pontoons that allow the bridge to float will be designed to withstand higher winds. In its climate impacts vulnerability assessment, WSDOT has recognized that high winds could increase as a result of climate change and more extreme weather events.

Our People, Our Planet, Our Power: Community Led Research in South Seattle

Our People, Our Planet, Our Power is a compilation of. ndings, stories, and recommendations from community discussions in South Seattle/King County, Washington, facilitated by Puget Sound Sage and Got Green’s Climate Justice Project. This project was run by a steering committing of people of color, who designed and implemented a survey to identify the perspectives of people of color living in South Seattle related to climate change. Over nine months, the research team interviewed 175 people and 30 organizations to determine collective priorities and initiate a process of equitable planning.

This Policy Platform outlines actionable strategies for federal agencies that can be implemented immediately to protect and restore the watersheds of the western U. S. The policy recommendations were developed by Carpe Diem West’s Healthy Headwaters Alliance, offering near-term policy solutions for the long-term resilience of forested headwaters for water supply. Forested watershed and source water protection is critical for climate resiliency. Watersheds filter pollutants, control erosion, regulate temperature, attenuate floods, and buffer human activities from drinking water resources.

Seattle Extreme Heat Scenario-Based Pilot-Project in Frontline Communities - Racial Equity Mini Evaluation

The Seattle, Washington Extreme Heat Scenario-Based Pilot-Project was commissioned by the City of Seattle Office of Sustainability and Environment, funded in part by the Urban Sustainability Directors Network, and conducted by Equity Matters. It was commissioned as a pilot program to understand how municipal agencies, including Public Health - Seattle and King County, and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, can better support low-income communities and communities of color during extreme heat events.

King County Strategic Climate Action Plan - 2015 Update

In November 2015 King County, Washington adopted an update to their Strategic Climate Action Plan, which includes the county's plans for both reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for climate change impacts. Section 2 describes the county's adaptation plans for 12 focus areas: built environment (wastewater, roads and bridges, airport, county buildings and facilities) and planning and regional services (regional planning, public health, stormwater, floodplains, salmon recovery and rural programs, public transportation, environmental science and monitoring, and emergency management).

King County, Washington Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan Update
November 2014
The King County, Washington Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan reflects a partnership between the County and 55 different cities, schools, fire districts, hospitals and utility districts throughout the County to identify and mitigate the impacts of disasters - including the impacts of climate change. In 2015, the final updated plan was approved by Washington State and FEMA. Federal compliance rules require this plan be updated every five years.
