The Nature-Based Solutions Resource Guide 2. 0, released by the White House in December of 2023, aims to encourage implementation and awareness of nature-based solutions employed by federal agencies and partners. The Guide defines nature-based solutions as “actions to protect, sustainably manage, or restore natural or modified ecosystems to address societal challenges, simultaneously providing benefits for people and the environment. ” Nature-based solutions can be used to provide a wide range of benefits, such as supporting wildlife, reducing heat stress, reducing future disaster risk, and overcoming environmental injustices.

September 23, 2021
On September 23, 2021, California signed a $15-billion climate-investment package that includes 24 bills dedicated to tackling the climate crisis and protecting frontline communities in California. The bills address clean energy, wildfires, droughts, community climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, extreme heat, and sea-level rise, among other topics. As Governor Gavin Newsom explained, the bills aim to address “the climate crisis head-on while protecting the hardest-hit communities” in California.

The U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) offers financial incentives and technical support through multiple programs to public and private landowners aiming to conserve wetlands, agricultural lands, grasslands, and forests through long-term easements. NRCS provides funding opportunities to acquire land for conservation in both a post-disaster and pre-disaster context. All NRCS programs are voluntary and allow working lands owners to be compensated for conserving their lands. These programs and easements can increase local resilience to climate change by improving water quality, reducing soil erosion, and enhancing wildlife habitat. Most USDA conservation funding is allocated through the Commodity Credit Corporation and authorized in Farm Bills (about $5.3 billion in Fiscal Year 2018) , while other conservation programs - offering mostly technical assistance - are funded by discretionary spending and annual appropriations (about $1 billion annually).

The Agricultural Climate Resiliency & Efficiencies (ACRE) was created as part of the implementation of Governor Baker’s Executive Order 569, which focuses reducing carbon emissions and building a more climate resilient Massachusetts. The program advances that goal - as well as more specific goals identified in the Massachusetts Local Action Food Plan - by providing grants to producers to implement practices that improve their farms’ resiliency. $500,000 in grants have gone to 16 Massachusetts farms to install practices that help mitigate and adapt to climate impacts.

California Assembly Bill 2722 established the Transformative Climate Communities Program, to be administered by the Strategic Growth Council (SGC). The forthcoming Program will accelerate greenhouse gas reduction and advance local climate action in disadvantaged communities through an integrated, community-based approach. The Program intends to help realize the State’s vision of “Vibrant Communities and Landscapes,” demonstrating how meaningful community engagement coupled with strategic investments in transportation, housing, food, energy, natural resources, and waste can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution, while also addressing growing equity issues and enhancing economic opportunity and community resilience.

The U. S. Department of the Interior (DOI) is funding research through the Pacific Islands Climate Science Center (CSC) on the Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) human migration dynamics in 2016. This project will examine the extent to which direct and indirect links between patterns of human migration and climate events can be identified. The researchers will examine migration trends and motivations, characterize changes that have taken place to local lands and ecosystems in the RMI, and use projections of climate change to understand which islands and communities may be at highest risk in the future.

The Neighborhood Gardens Trust has been operating as an entity that protects community gardens in the City of Philadelphia since 1986. Working with community gardeners, local leaders, and neighborhood organizations, NGT is a land trust that helps these individuals or groups secure ownership or long-term lease contracts for these gardens to prevent redevelopment or reuse of the land. The organization focuses the majority of its land acquisition and assistance services in lower-income areas throughout Philadelphia, with a specific emphasis on serving underrepresented communities. Since its founding, NGT has protected 48 community gardens throughout Philadelphia, and is on track to protect at least 70 by 2022.

Honor the Earth is currently funding its Building Resilience in Indigenous Communities Initiative. Funding is limited to Indigenous-led organizations only. Honor the Earth recognizes that Native grassroots groups remain on the frontlines of environmental protection in the U. S. , but there are ongoing disparities in philanthropy. According to Honor the Earth’s website, as of 2016, only 0. 07% of philanthropy goes to Native groups. Starting in 2011, Honor the Earth created the first and only grant-making partnership between a Native organization and a national charitable institution, the Native Communities Program.

In response to President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, Microsoft offers the Climate Data Initiative (CDI) Award program. This program supports the CDI’s goals of preparedness for and resilience to climate change impacts.The Microsoft Azure for Research program granted 12 months of free cloud computing resources to 20 awardees selected. Each award provides up to 180,000 hours of cloud computing time and 20 terabytes of cloud storage to be used for the project.
